- Biography:
- I started building bikes in about 1982. In about 1984 traded up from my Mongoose BMX to a racer but found it too weak for the style of riding I was known for. I started talking to a local bike shop talking about my needs and he showed me various heavy duty replacment parts that would suit me to upgrade my racer. After a while I had a custom frame made to suit my frame if you get my meaning, converted the goose neck to bmx and long BMX style forks with low Yamaha YZ250 bars and 1-1/4" alloy rims / Shimano quick release hubs and cluster (cassette) and one of the first suntour rachet gear changes that came on the market (about 1983 or 84 I think?) With alloy seat pole and leather Italian racing seat, alloy seat clamp BMX grips, chromed Mongoose gooseneck, and black baked paint work, this was, in my life anyway, the earliest version of a mountain bike I know of. Doesn't mean it never happened before, I just never saw anthing like it way back then. Sounds real boring in todays terms, but then, I was between 12 and 14 when finished and with a part time job ($60 pw) which was big money for a kid then but the bill was about $700 or something like $2000 - $2500 today.
For me, it was the start of something I still have a thing for and my 1996 Mongoose which still looks like new, looks almost exactly like the bike I built around 13 years earlier. But how hot are bikes today, there's no looking back boyz and girlz. Ride hard.....
