So she's finally back to bare frame. I'm currently prepping all the main bits for paint/anodising. How's this for a fancy bit of engineering for a 15 year old bike...

Ben, I love your bike!

The oil cooler is a trick little addition. Good thing the mount and fin guard looks fairly solid as I'd be a bit dubious of it's longevity up in the bush if it wasn't that way. Also, how much does it increase fluid capacity by?

I'v also always thought it's weird how the header pipe crosses over.

sxe, is that top triple clamp made out of billet or something? looks trick!

Cheers dude, shame the rest of the bike looks so ratty. I want to pull the suspension son and send it off for a rebuild/revalve, and once I have all that shit out, it's not that much further to strip the entire frame and powdercoat it...

I'm not sure how much extra oil the cooler adds. Maybe 200-300ml. I've seen a massive drop in oil temps though - partly due to lower ambient temps lately I suppose, but it's definitely doing it's job.

I kinda wish I'd gone with a different mounting setup. It does leave it vulnerable to rocks and such, and it mounts to the engine side case with very long bolts and machined ally spacers - creating a nice big lever arm for when it hits something. Having said that, I think it took a decent hit on tuesday when I rode into a big fuckoff rut, and it was fine.

This'll probably have a few people laugh at me but...

Why is there a steel-wool like substance fixed in my exhaust? I can only think that it would be there for sound dampening, but I can't find anything on the net saying that this sort of material is used...?

Yup that's in there for noise supression, pretty sure it isn't as good as fibreglass for reducing noise but isn't as likely to burn out/disintegrate.

I figure you all probably hate the 'WAT CAR IZ GUD?' people, but at the risk of that I'd just quickly like to know:

AE86, 250,000km, original 4A-C engine and new springs+shocks. Very very clean, no gay mawdzz. $5,000?

I was talking to a family friend who was a mechanic for like 40 years (you know the type). Said that the car was brilliant, sounded very keen until he asked about the price.

He laughed and literally pulled out the great Castle classic, "tell him he's dreaming". Anything over $2,000 he said was far too much. I'm having a somewhat difficult time believing that, considering the price that they do often sell for??

You're better off with an AE71 Corolla which is essentially the same apart from the shell and chassis, the difference in handling between them is negligible after good suspension tuning. $5,000 is too much, 4age swapped 86's with light suspension work come up for 7-8k fairly often, the only valuable part is the clean shell.

86's generally don't have gay mawdz, what do you mean by that? Most common mods have a positive effect, some less than others.

He's right. I had an AE86, rust-free (had it all cut out) with 150 000km. Sold it in 2000 for $3000 and it took AGES to sell.

Yep. Obviously the lower one is too.

For everyone else - I'm trying to get the triple clamps nice and clean...is there any reason I can't stick them in the dishwasher?

Aright, thanks. Will definitely look around for a 71 then, they do come up far faaaar cheaper than the 86 from what I've seen.

I should have said that I didn't really mean 'gay' mods, but moreso it looks very close to stock. I.e. no gold paint + body kits + mismatched hood + very trashed interior. Personally, I'm not a huge fan of the look that some people go for with 86's.

Also is there someway to get these pop rivet things out without breaking them?

Just got a new exhaust bent up for my camaro. Sounds amazing. The guy who did it specialises in hotrod exhausts, and it has just the right combo of rumble and crackle. And it makes the right sounds at the right times so I don't sound like that idiot who is roaring away from the lights, but barely accelerating. Very, very happy with the work. I was giggling the whole way home from tuggeranong every time I touched the accelerator.

Been looking at dirty 30's (e30 BMW's) thinking cheap stance/drift/bogan ride.

And Floody are you related to Flood motorcycles in Lilydale in Melbourne?

No relation.

E30+cheap coilovers+welded diff+cheapo sportmaxx/rota wheels = stance/drift/bogan ride.
