Square eyes for me

... Captain Corelli something-or-other I think it's called (Captain Corelli was the lead character played by Cage).
Captain Corelli's Mandolin ... meh ... oddjob beat me to the post

There was a quiz in the paper years ago...'name 15 modes of travel Indiana uses across all three films...'
1. Sea plane (Raiders)
2. Coal cart (Temple of Doom)
3. Horse (Raiders)
4. Elephant (Temple of Doom)
5. 3 prop plane (the one that crashes into the mountain in Temple of Doom)
6. Raft (Temple of Doom)
7. U-boat (Raiders)
8. Freighter (Raiders)
9. Wooden Speed boat (Last Crusade)
10. WW1 tank (Last Crusade)
11. Bentley (Last Crusade)
12. Soft top (Temple of Doom) the one that Short Round drives
13. Motorbike (Last Crusade)
14. Train (Last Crusade) River Pheonix whips himself
15. Fark it ... I'm sure there was a camel in there somewhere at the end of Raiders ... but can't remember (although I could be mistaking this with Scorpion King) ... wait ... he also ran alot ... yippy

... unlike Saving Private Ryan which glamorises it (even though some people consider it anti-war I think most people get super-excited watching it).
I can see what your saying ... but for me that openning scene, just makes you respect the poor buggers that kepts going ... and more so for those that kept some humanity in the face of all that mayhem and horror.

The more I watch it the more I think I couldn't be a soldier.

Dave:
I'll keep an eye out for "The Winds of War" ... I also remember there being some accompanying magazines. I'm sure ABC shops will have them (but always bloody at a premium price).

Thanks everybody ... I thought I had seen a lot and I'm sure as soon as I get some of these I'll suddenly remember them ... but lots to look for. :)

Oh, can anybody recommend any Russian movies ... apparently pretty gruesome ... babies getting slaughtered etc etc ... and they were very propaganda driven.

Merry fucking Xmas to you assholes

Try reading Les Carlyon's book "The Great War" then. Gave me a new appreciation for the horrors of war. I'm determined to go to the ANZAC service in France next year because of it.

Other books worth looking at are Stalingrad and Berlin by Antony Beevor.

Thanks ^^ I'll add it to the massive book list I'm developing :D ... I've got the Aussie memorials / graves in France and Belgium on my list of things to do before I die (I think its Belgium)

Dave ... ignore my last post re Winds of War ... I think I'm mistaking this with a doco series I use to watch as a kid ...

*edit The World at War is the one I was thinking off

BoB (the real one, not the American historical revisionist TV series Band of Brothers) is quite possibly the greatest war movie ever made. There's plenty of innaccuracies, but I'll forgive that, mostly because a real Buchon is better than any number of CGI BF109's.

I'll give props to Dark Blue World as well, despite suffering from the same problems. Still I'd rather see real Spitfires of the wrong mark than historically accurate CGI Spitfires.

It'll be interesting to see how the much talked about and long awaited Peter Jackson remake of "The Dam Busters" turns out. I'm betting it won't be a patch on the original, despite JAckson being a noted Aviation buff. I can't imagine that Hollywood will let the dog's name* stay either.
Haha. Of course you will know this but did you know that Buchon refers to pigeon? I eithercase, I agree. I would rather see a Ha1112 then a computer animated one. The Heinkels in the Battle of Britain were also Spanish equivalents...um...CASA-built 2111s but again, apart from the engines, none would be the wiser.

Few other movies are like that. The aircraft used for Memphis Belle is a B-17F which is correct but all the planes used that are 'shot down' are played by 'Sally B', a B-17G fitted with smoke ejectors...you can see when 'Windy City' is shot down in the begining that she has a chin turret which didnt come untill later in the war. Same with the P-51s. B-17s were not escorted at that time and even then, the planes would not have been the 'D' designation. But its a good view never the less.

Pearl Harbour uses T6/Harvard-derived 'Zeros'...a handful were done properly with realistic canopies etc but the vast majority kept their 'T6 look'...The Nikajima B5Ns as well as the D3As were built off BT-13 Valiants airframes I think...for the D3A, they just added the bullet-shaped fairings over the lowered wheels to give that Aichi-look. All these aircraft were used in Tora! Tora! Tora!

Nerf Herder; Cheat! Car is one mode of transport! You forgot Airship too!
1. Plane (Stearman, DC-3, Shorts and the Tigermoth)
2. Coal cart
3. Horse
4. Elephant
5. Ship (Freighter)
6. Raft/Boat
7. U-boat
8. Tank
9. Airship
10. Car
11. Motorbike (with Sean Connery)
12. Train (Circus Train)
13. Truck (Best part of Raiders)
14. Whip (im gunna count that...he uses it as a flying fox in Temple of Doom)
15. yeah...fark it...he swims/runs/walks etc

"We were soldiers" - Mel Gibson in his pre-anti-semite phase. I thought it was OK. Windtalkers, on the other hand, was complete crap.

I'll watch Guns of Naverone anytime it's on telly. Same with Eagle has Landed.

The first war movie I ever saw was Battle of Britian, and I still remember the scene where the British pilot gets shot in the cockpit, and you see blood spatter all over the inside of his goggles. I thought that was the coolest thing I had ever seen back when I was a kid.

If you liked that, there is a scene in 'The Tuskegee Airmen' where a fighter attacks the tail gunner of a B-17 from one side and you see the tail gunner's head sprayed against the window. When the plane lands, you see one of the waist gunners hanging out the side of the plane...his blood splattered all over the US star on the side. Freaked me out as a kid. (Plus the fact half the actual battles in the flick are real camera footage.)

damit :D ... I quoted two planes and two cars ... can't believe I forgot the airship and the truck.

In BoBrit ... the bit I remember the most was the Stuka attack ... no idea how realistic it was but I made my brother buy an airfix model kit the next time we were in Hobbico :D good to be the youngest in the family :p

It was a melted flaming wreck not long after ... :p

Oh, its poetic licence at its best. If you want accuracy, watch the original one (some guy actually followed the real Memphis Belle on its 25th and final mission in a B-25 chase plane and documented it into a film...this is what captured Hollywood)
QUOTE]

their last mission didn't actually have the same crew as featured in the movie.
I understand your point though, historical accuracy in films isn't always the best idea. It's just in some cases it actually offends the people featured (as it did in this case), and yeh.. interesting stuff there, I didn't know they lost a plane filming it it. Cheers

.
We were Soldiers is a Vietnam film and a fucking dog-awful cliche'd to death one at that! It was directed by the guy who wrote 'Braveheart' so you can imagine just how authentic it is. in fact, no you don't. You've seen it! It's full of every cheesy war movie cliche since the days of of fucking Braveheart itsealf and it doesn't really improve on the formula either.

I'll tell you what though.

After watching John Rambo (coolest movie ever if exploding heads are your thing), I think If Sylvester Stallone and Mel Gibson got together and made a movie it might well be the greatest piece of cinema ever placed on celluloid! Between the two of them, they shit all over Sam Raimi, Wes Craven and George Romero when it comes to bloodshed.

Let 'em loose!

I believe a few people arced up about the Tuskegee Airmen too when the destroyer was sunk with just machine guns from the Mustang. People criticised it because it was unrealistic when In actual fact, it happened.(Apparently there was a fog and the two planes pretty much emerged from it right on top of the destroyer. Rather then fly over the ship and leave the bellies of their aircraft open to AA fire, they decided to just strafe it since it was a suprise attack and the Germans would be very confused. In either case, one of the pilots recalls his tracer fire running up the side of the ship and down a few hatches setting off the forward magazines in the ship...BOOM!)

Un long dimanche de fiançailles (A Very Long Engagement)
Very good French movie about WWI. In French with subtitles.

French chick finds out that her fiancé has been court martialed along with a few others on the Western Front for trying to escape from the trenches. They are forced out into No-Man's land between the French and Germans. The girl then tries to find out what happened to her fiancé and his friends.

it's not exactly a classic - far from it- but has anyone seen 1941?
That is a Classic ... John Bellushi(sp), Dan Aykroyd(sp) Christopher Lee (I'll be asking about Vampire Movies soon) ... another Spielberg master piece :D

Just read this

Along with Tom Hanks, Spielberg is an executive producer of the 10-part television mini-series The Pacific, which is set during World War II and is being shot in Australia. The Seven Network is a co-producer of the show. Spielberg said that while he "watched dailies and made my notes", he was not planning to come to Australia for the shooting.

Wind talkers got a little faggy with the "overcome racial barrriers stuff" but was a good story about the American Indians and their contribution.

behind enemy lines was Bosnia ... but yeah, I liked that one as well.

some bumpf about 'The Pacific'
Yeah, they were filming it around Melbourne over the summer. Some of the scenes were actually filmed out at the You-Yangs (popular Melbourne riding spot).

Is it too much to ask for a bit of careless continuity error on the part of the directors where a bit of DH action is glimpsed in the background a la the fabled red mini in Ben Hur (unfortunately an urban myth that one, though)?

:p

*Nigger. Very un-PC, but the dog's name WAS Nigger and should stay. This is not a made up story, it's real, and killed lots of people. You can't fuck with stuff like that.
Just read that the script is being written by none other than Stephen Fry.

Now Fry's a bit of a renaissance man hell, a living legend to be more precise but I just can't shake the mental image of 'Bomber' Harris as General Melchett from Blackadder Goes Forth...

just a little grave digger.

Watched Fury on the plane the other week. Ill be honest i cant remember it ... couldnt really hear the dialogue with me being deaf and all the ambient noise ... but i remember the scene with the tiger which i thought was pretty cool. Specifically the holes left by the shells in the armour.

Might need to watch it again to follow it better

Also watched the remake and original of Red Dawn recently ... good story let down by the acting
