The LS is a masterclass in optimised design. It’s a pushrod 2 valve dinosaur on initial glance, but the attention and engineering prowess (including a lot of trick metallurgy) that’s gone into making it a formidable pumper of air and fuel is remarkable. Power to weight is good, but power to size is better - competitors overhead cam engines may be similar in grunt but they can’t match the low centre of gravity an LS grants (the corvette for example).
I have owned three. LS2, LS3 and LSA.

I’ve only had the occasional piloting pleasure. Rental VF SSV with LS3 Melbourne-Canberra, and my brother VE HSV ute (the Maloo without the body kit whatever it’s called..).

I’m a fan. I’d like a Toyota 86 with one fitted...

The LS2 was ok, especially after the issues that emerged with the LS1. Tuned with inlet and exhaust it got to 325 or 330kW. The LS3 was just better in every way. Easy 350kW with fewer mods. Better consumption under the same conditions. The LSA was a powerhouse. Probably 475kW when I sold it but you paid for that blower spinning all the time. A 1.9L supercharger consumes as much power as a lot of 4 cylinders produce. Never saw under 10L/100 from it on a trip while the LS3 would return genuine 7s under the same touring conditions. A mate's LSA was taken much further. 575rwkW. Crazy mongrel of a thing.

Sigh. I genuinely believe I've missed my opportunity to own any one of those. I 100% acknowledge and agree anything electric will tromp all over them in terms of numbers, but dat sound. Enough to make my inner bogan cry :(

Getting the XR4 ready for its debut. Just the harness left to fit. Bonnet pins, extinguisher, window net etc all done. Had some debate about the window net as the airconditioning is still functioning. So AC while waiting in line and then window down for the run...

Who says dimples are reserved for Escorts.

Some of the rules are a bit funny though. If we had the car registered it wouldn't need bonnet pins even though the system is exactly the same. Ah well.

Can I trust apps? Three different ones were within 1dB. Limit if 90... 88 at 7,300 rpm.
What frequency rating scale is your app ? Linear or A-weight ? I assume that the vehicle spec would be in an A-weight as that is what all environmental noise regulation is in. Let me know if you need a proper sound level meter to test with.

At work we’ve found that the apps are usually within a couple of decibels for noise that is mainly mid frequency range.

You probably want to put something on those wires that go through the channel in the floor as the body flexing will most likely give the wires chafing over years, I'm surprised they let you have the battery in cabin without a battery box too.

Cables are double iinsulated and tied down. AGM battery is fine as it is.
You'll have to at least cover the terminals on the battery, you can't have non insulated electrical connections in the cabin and I'll bet you'll turn up to somewhere like Winton and you'll get pinged for the cable and be left arguing with the scrutineer.

Harness and mesh done. Just have to sticker it and a couple of minor tidy ups and it is ready for Saturday. Still have to roll the guards but first I have to fix the tool...

The mesh is for window down racing around the track, staging and getting to the track will be window up and AC on!

Have discussed this with the EPA senior noise engineer at work. He put me onto these references:

One would like to think this one coming from a credible authority would be reliable:

Many thanks. I don't think that the phone and pad could deal with the harsh harmonics so the metered figure was probably way lower than a real meter would read. Probably ok ish in an environment with a constant level of noise though those articles suggest it is a bit random. Anyway we added a hotdog style muffler this morning and it has quietened the bark and the note is nicer too, might do a similar set up for the Escort depending on actual noise levels. Anyway will find out at 07:00 Saturday morning!!!!

A little reminder to be careful...

Got a massive fright one day when I was a teenager doing something on the brakes of the paddock basher, soft dirt under the jack gave way -lucky I hadn't got my head in the wheel well... That lesson stuck - but looking at how I did the front strut replacement on the Megane today I think this is a good reminder to not get complacent. I had the front up on two trolley jacks under the sills, but no axle stands - naughty. I did slide the wheels under the front subframe and they would have caught the car and I didnt go under it all, but I should have put the axle stands under it anyway.

Kid I knew at school found his Dad dead under a car one sunday afternoon when he went to call him in for lunch.
