What would the brains trust tackle first in this equation?
I'd go with the powered sub and the cat. Just bear in mind that very few powered subs are aesthetically pleasing.

Another option may be to trial some transmission line loudspeakers if you can find some...

Transmission line is a brand?
As already mentioned, it's a type of loudspeaker. Good ones can often make much more of the lower frequencies than a typical ported design.

They aren't common because the cabinets are more complicated to make and they are more difficult to model during the design phase. Both of these things can make them comparatively expensive...

However, DIY designs are quite common. And loudspeakers are not difficult to build.

Introducing a mountain biker to diy hifi is like getting your cousin hooked on cocaine. May as well throw in an addiction to photography too.

Built my first set of speakers at the age of 16

Has rca pre out so another option could be adding a power amp. No specific sub out but has 2 sets of speaker terminals which you can assign low/high pass to.
Pre out and power in? Then you can run the pre out to a powered sub that has a high pass filter and run back to the power in. Sub will use lower frequencies and power amp only deals with what's left. I have my thunderbox set up like this though I run to seperate power amps.

My current speakers (old 80s ones) might be too big (physically) for our new lounge.

Might be able to reconfigure furniture a bit, but an excuse to look up speaker porn! Thinking of Q acoustics 3020i to replace them - they look awesome and get great reviews at that price point.

Pre out would be the entire signal, can’t see a return option. I have a powered sub in the tele room, if I can find some old speaker cable and solder some rcas on 1 end I could try that option. I did find a retailer in Melb which does both B&W & NAD so maybe they’re worth a shout, though my speakers are rather old.

My NAD had a loop from pre out to power in. Pulled them and ran through the thunderbox. Now I had a dedicated preamp with sub signal and power amps. Chuck up a pic of the back or the model number.

Just plugged the sub from the telly room in with predictably big results.

Time to go shopping, with a SH budget unfortunately

Some good options for under $1k in the shops down there. Have fun!
