Thanks for all the bananas
I'm looking at one of the following -

Vitus Sentier 29 VRS - $2,299
https://www.chainreactioncycles.com/au/en/vitus-sentier-29-vrs-bike-xt-slx-1x12-2020/rp-prod181533

Pros - RockShox Revelation RC with Motion Control damper, SLX 12 speed
Cons - Least progressive geometry, shortest reach, steepest HTA (66.5 deg)

Nukeproof 290 Comp - $2,199
https://www.chainreactioncycles.com/au/en/nukeproof-scout-290-comp-bike-sx-eagle-2020/rp-prod183324

Pros - Solid frame, Sektor fork, strong wheels, quality tyres, nice colour, pre-installed chain guard
Cons - SX Eagle (not as good as Shimano)

Norco Fluid HT1 - $2,199
https://www.norco.com/bikes/2020/mountain/trail/fluid-ht-aluminum/fluid-ht-1/

Pros - Most progressive geometry, Sektor fork, good reach, steepest ST angle, interesting colour, NX shifting and rear der, internal cabling
Cons - 120mm travel (might not be a con?), 160mm rear rotor, crap tyres

Specialized Fuse Comp - $2,300
https://www.specialized.com/au/en/fuse-comp-29/p/171069

Pros - 4 piston front caliper, big brand support, quality frame, decent tyres, 200mm/180mm rotors, 12 speed Eagle, internal cabling
Cons - Recon RL fork, least value parts build

The top two I can't test ride (mail order only) but they do get high scores in test reviews. I currently ride a 2014 Giant Talon so all of these would be an upgrade! Most of my riding is at Smithfield (Cairns) trails.

Nukeproof or the Norco would be my pics there - have you looked at the Norco Torrent as well? There is the Kona Honzo too, but its not as well specc'd at that price point, but cool frame that would upgrade nicely over time.

How difficult is it to upgrade a rear rotor to 180mm?

Also, I'm not big on jumps, gaps and downhill courses, will 120mm be ok for me?

Usually very easy.

You'll need a caliper adaptor to accommodate the extra diameter.

More than likely adaptor and rotor will be yours for very little if you post up a wanted ad here.

@HamboCairns, Keep an eye out on the second hand market as All Mountain Hard tails are not for everyone and you do see people moving them almost new after giving them a try. I know it is not the point of this thread but there are some cool bikes out there collecting dust.

I started with a frame and built mine up for just under 2k with a mixture of new and used parts so the Torrent frame only could also be an option if you have time to collect bargain parts.

I can say that the Sektor fork is surprisingly good. I am running one on my GT sensor and when I bottomed it out getting too front heavy it saved my ass, with out a harsh bottom out, when I was sure I was going over the bars. When I got the bike I thought it would be an necessary upgrade but so far it has been good.

I think 130mm to 140mm is the sweet from travel spot for a HT. I threw my old 120mm fork on my daughters bike when I upgraded.

I really enjoy riding on my hardtail so I don't see why a longer and slacker version wouldn't suit :) I'm a slow rider anyway so I just want something I can stretch out on and squat down low through technical downward parts!

I'd consider a frame only build - Nukeproof Scout ($599) and Norco Torrent ($999) look like great bikes - the Specialized Fuse is also an option but it might be a bit pricey at $999, same as the Torrent.

Could I build a decent bike for another $1,200 if I go with the Scout?

I'd aim for a 130mm Sektor at minimum (Revelation/Yari is a bonus!), Shimano drivetrain + brakes, budget dropper, Nukeproof cockpit and some strong but lightweight 30mm rims to support 2.4/2.5 tyres.

Our house is getting renovated in Jan so I'll likely have funds in March. It's a while away but I'm bored and I want to know what I could look forward to!!

What size are you after?

I have a mate with a ragley blue pig with DVO diamond forks and a reasonable build kit that he is considering selling.

I'd imagine it would be within your budget.

If you are interested, pm me and I'll pass his details on to you.

Yeah, their a la cart option looks good, although I couldn't get the configuration working for the AM version the other day.
