Laika wasn't the first mammal, at least I don't think so. A monkey went up in the late 40s if it was far enough to qualify as space. Alfred or Albert? Cannot recall the vehicle. However I remember reading a long while ago the newly hatched Americans from Germany sent flies up in a V-2 rocket a year or so before the monkey.

Laika was Sputnik 2?
