I currently have a Giant Talon 1 29er, and while the gears shift "fine", the actuation is rather casual. Is this due to the lower spec groupset X5 SRAM, or just a MTB querk? Will a top o the line f/d and r/d solve this?

You're all right to some extent, my Forerunner 310XT worked REALLY well in really thick bush once. It never lost signal and the 28km run was all there when I uploaded it. Amazing accuracy.
