Check out http://www.exped.com one of my mates just got a SynMat UL to replace a thermarest mat he had. He can actually sleep on his side with out his hip touching the ground, and weighing less than 500g and packing smaller he is much happier with it than his old thermarest (cheaper too).
They do head into Kowen every once in while but I have only seen them driving around the forest near the old homestead site where the 24hr was held before moving to stromlo. Noisy and easy to dodge.

I was just wondering if you have decided on when stage one and four will start? I am trying to work out if I can make use of some free accommodation without having to get up at sparrows fart to make the start line on time.

The Orchard Road gate is only 100m up from the Sparrow Hill parking area so it is pretty easy to find. A map has been published and last time I was out there the loop was marked fairly well.

You could try camping at the old Kowen Homestead where the Scott/Mont was held before heading over to Stromlo.
