Continental GP4000SII WET weather grip

taking a shit with my boobs out
I'm sore all over, looks like a bit of whiplash as crap my neck is sore. Hip is starting to bruise up. I managed to scrape the collar of my road jersey in the crash - how the hell do you manage the collar?
Happy healing, you got a few annoying days ahead.

Strange injury to the collar indeed. A bloke I ride with fell off on a flat stretch of road, scored up his cranks, bars, shifters, pedals and himself ... but the only damage to the frame was a large gouge on the top tube near the seatpost... you couldn't have made that section of frame touch the road or any other component on the bike.

I tentatively conclude it was a bit of slippy wetness, bad luck, too fast, high pressure and voodoo. Shit happens.

Bike is at the shop being looked over - rear derailleur was playing up, it got scratched up pretty well so took a good hit - fall was on drive (right) side.
did you bonk your head on the road and impact the helmet in the process(lightly or heavily)? The whiplash and the scraped collar suggests that you did.

Pretty sure helmet was not touched. I guess was possible though, its a quick impact, and you do bounce a bit. No damage whatsoever to helmet. If there was the slightest damage to it, I would bin it straight away.

My shoulder impacted, so maybe as I slid along it dragged the collar down into the asphalt.

+1 for lower pressures. I've been running 25mm Conti GP4000SII on 19mm ID rims (H Son Plus Archetypes) at 80PSI for the last two years without issue in wet or dry, no pinch flats and only one puncture from a brad that I didn't notice and must've slowly worked its way in. I'm 72kg for reference.

The spill below was on a road I had ridden over 100 times, it got a light sprinkle and boom... slid for about 4-5m on wet bitumen before stopping against a fence. Got up and thought WTF, then seen the rosy red through the knicks and headed for home as the pain set in. Was a bit of impact pain initially but nothing compared to the road rash pain in the following 3-4 weeks. This bingle was on GP4000s... Also fu#ked up a $250 pair of Assos t.centos, zero damage to my bike.
I know that pain, had a road rash like that once, wasn't a lack of grip issue just my poor judgement - taking a hairpin too fast. First thing I did was scrub the shit out of it in the shower to get the crap out of it (hurt like hell) and then applied a waterproof dressing, reckon it saved me some healing time. Had to replace the dressing a couple of times due to weeping in the first few days but was all but healed after 2 weeks.

A good trick for grazes is to apply hypafix over the graze once you have cleaned and sterilised (silvadene is good). The wound then weeps through the hypafix and dresssings over the hypafix can be replaced. This avoids the fun of peeling dressings off the graze. Eventually a scab will form over the hypafix and once the graze has fully healed the hypafix and scab will fall off. Note the hypafix will become part of the wound and will need to be protected by a bandage/tubigrip/etc.

Yep, local chemist told me about this method after recent shin carnage.
Works well. Just leave it on & wait.

I run Schwobble One Pro tubeless in 28mm. Very good in the wet, can still modulate (hydro disc brakes also help here!!!) a deliberately locked rear wheel for those entertaining sideways entries to sharp corners.

I'm about 75kgs, run 70psi in the front, 80 in the back. Tubeless tyres in sensible widths are a godsend for roadies!!

So from this I have ended up with a Huge haematoma on my hip, and edges of it are sharply painful. Now today have been booked to see an orthopaedic surgeon as the ultrasound shows the haematoma is inside the muscle fascia. Crap.

Might be worth asking about non-surgical options - keep in mind that Surgeons love cutting things, that may or may not need to be cut.

I have avoided at least two unnecessary surgeries because I asked questions. YMMV, of course.

You have my sympathies... My hip woke me up in the night again. A year from a labrum repair surgery I got diagnosed with calcified tendons which is why I’m still in chronic pain... This getting old caper is tough. Combined with stacking bikes....

Last night on way home, ran over bits of a smashed beer bottle (there are a lot of losers out west of Sydney) on the Western Sydney Parklands lanes, and sliced open the rear GP4000SII tyre, so its in the bin.

Now trying to decide what to replace them with.

Current possibles:
  • Schwalbe Pro One Tubeless
  • Schwalbe Durano Raceguard
  • Michelin Pro4 Endurance
  • Hutchinson Fusion 3 tubeless
  • Hutchinson Intensive 2 tubeless
  • Maxxis Padrone
  • Pirelli P Zero
I have the Bora carbon wheels clincher only, but also have Shamal 2-way tubeless wheels so tubeless a definite option. Plus with a tube they probably offer extra puncture protection.

Also contemplating racing grippy tyres with a tyre liner to reduce punctures.

Many options.

I know those exits and they can be a bit rugged. Do you mean the exit past the southern side of the Equestrian centre that climbs up to Moonrise? If I was a snake, I'd hang out around that area. Or other one near the Gypsy Joker's clubhouse?

I am still running Maxxis Refuse and they are a great all rounder and tough enough for the M7. I have no reason to change.

I have a Specialised All Condition Sport with Flak Jacket. It is new with tags and you can have it for free if you like. One of these.

Cheers, I have ordered the Michelin Power Competition 25mm tyres, with Mr Tuffy Ultralite tyre liners. Hopefully that can give me grippy tyres with some puncture resistance. I'm giving the other GP4000sII to a mate who loves them.

On my wet weather bike I am running two Maxxis Refuse and have no complaints, so agree with you there. I am unable to fit them onto my Campagnolo Bora carbon rims - they just don't go together .

Is that Specialized tyre a 28mm size? If its 23mm or 25mm I might take you up on it.

Where I punctured is just off Richmond Rd and Knox Rd, at a bridge in there.

Oh, we will have to meet up for a ride seeing you're in the area - PM me.

I have the Refuse'd shoehorned onto my Campagnolo Vento's and it is knuckle skinning experience in pain, suffering and harsh language to get them on or off. God help me if they ever go flat while on the road.

They are 700cc x 23mm.

Oh, the northern Parklands side. The bridge near Dean Park is also a place to keep you eyes open for bogan activity. I do try to get out on the M7 regularly but am a bit overdue for return now. I would have rode past you for certain though.

With tubeless, dont forget to carry TWO tyre levers for when you need to put in the tube on the side of the road... They're invariably way more of a pain to get off!!

Upside is you need to do it less. But more shed time required - the overall time spent faffing with tyres is I think a bit more with tubeless, but its in the comfort of your shed rather than on the side of the road.

I believe (from what I read) the Hutchison will be tougher than the Schwobble Pro One - but Ive still done plenty of gravel work and they dont seem to suffer from cuts much (on horrible quartz gravel even).

Good choice!

The Cinelli will f@#^ing fly. Just need to go all ceramic bearings and jockey wheel and you will gain ~20 watts with no training.

No surgery needed. Just some funny calcified little lumps left.
