Help me build a bike toolset list

Thanks for all the bananas
This is brilliant thanks!

If I was you I would start with:
  • One of these. Yes there are better work stands out there, but I bought one of these (different branding but same stand) back in ~2009 and I still haven't had to replace it. It's creaky and a bit shit, but it's fine.
  • A set of good allen keys
  • BB tool appropriate to your current setup
  • Chain whip and cassette lockring tool
  • Chain breaker
  • Lubes/greases/tyre levers/zip ties/consumables assuming you don't already have them
  • Assorted non-bike tools from your local Mitre 10/Bunnings/garage sale/father-in-law/whatever (side cutters, cable cutters, needle-nose pliers, mallet, couple of screwdrivers). They don't all have to be Knipex but they shouldn't be shite either.
  • A tool box big enough that you can keep adding to it over time.
Are these allen keys pretty much the same? https://www.amazon.com/950-Hex-Plus-Multicolour-metric-BlackLaser/dp/B07X443PFF

Feelin' a bit rrranty
They're the same but short/stubby @HamboCairns. Probably not a massive issue in the smaller sizes but if you're trying to undo a crank or pedal with the 8mm you're likely to want the extra leverage of the standard length ones.

I would go to the actual physical store .

Can always get a deal and find other stuff to buy !

I got these ones from Bunnings recently, excellent value and glad to finally have the ball drive. I had at least one of every size in various legths and quality without the ball drive, including a Park AWS-10, which has also been excellent over 5 years.

I took this photo to show what I’ve replaced with quality tools. Hex keys etc not included in this. This is more what I’d call bike specific, that I use regularly. There are plenty more tools I want and add to this but I think a pretty good gauge of were to spend a little extra cash.

Ok so after much deliberation and research (thank you everyone!) I'm placing my order for a toolset (Bikehand Professional Toolset), a stand (Bikehand again), a chain checker (yup), a spare chain (KMC X10) and I'll buy some assembly grease locally.

I just need a Shimano bleed kit and a Rockshox 50hr kit and I'm sorted!

I'll buy higher quality stuff when the toolset ones shits me off or break (I'll be seeing you before long Pedro Vise Whip 2).

Once I get all that I can work out what's causing that weird knocking coming through the pedals..

That just takes me back to Mektronics?

And did you consider delivery to Cairns in that price?
Yes.

Yes. However, Sydney is a lot closer to Cairns than somewhere in America. You'll get them faster. However, since you have specialist tool shops locally (far more locally than me I might add)...I think you'll find something there of sufficient quality.

Those Kincrome ones look decent.
I lost the flow of this thread quite a while back, but if you're referring to Allen keys - the answer's no.

The small sizes round off, the chrome finish makes them more prone to slipping and rounding out fasteners too. Just no. I have used several brands of Allen keys over the years, the Kinchrome ones are okay if you only want to use each size a few times, but use them regularly (and the 3, 4, 5mm will be getting used all the time on bikes) and they don't hold up. Bondhus/Wera, etc.. spend the money right on Allen keys. Cheap Allen keys mean rounded out fasteners, which means trips to specialists fastener shops at best, or otherwise-fine components going in the bin at worst. Sounding like a grumpy old curmudgeon, but trying to guide you right here.

And I appreciate it. I think I'll save for the Wera ones which I can buy for a reasonable price.
