They are pretty good , if set up properly (read- follow instructions), because there is a tensioner wheel involved as well. This does a good job of keeping the chain wrapped around eithe cog (the wheel is "stepped" so it will work in the mid and small cog). Can't remember price offhand...
Hayes Problem
I suspect you have an "internal leak" ie the hose is leaking from the inner layer into the outer casing. This is sometimes very hard to find as it can happen at the caliper or the lever end(as well as anywhere in the line). If this is the case when you bleed the brake the feel at...
huh?
Sorry for slight OT but what do you mean Torpedo 7 may have taken off the serials??
Does the lever side have a recess for the lever? If it does you need to get it into this slot to undo the maxle (you may even need to tighten the other end with the lever opened in this pos to seat it in...
oops!!
Oh yeah , it's a good idea to get the b/b shell "chased and faced" to make sure it's straight , as this can have a detrimental efect on the b/b paticularly the plastic spacers (due to misalignment pressures).

I work in a shop and can tell you they are available as spares!! I had trouble with my Glory 8 b/b from new and got 2 of them just in case. They are VERY hard to fit though. I ended up breaking one ,and then put the other one in boiling water to get it to fit!!

Keep it !
You will learn valuable skills on a hardtail with short travel (or even rigid's !) .You will learn to "ride light" and pick lines way better this way , grasshopper (referance probably lost on younger ones) .
Snakes
Australia has 5 out of the top 10 poisonus snakes in the world , and a few of the most venomous spiders as well. But when you are crashing through the bush on a bike you tend to scare snakes off. Most snakes will avoid confruntation if they can. Where are you in the USA?Don't they have...
Reign
I work in a giant dealership and I'm sure you can't get a frame only, sorry !
The complete bikes are very good value though if you can save enough.
Ouch!!
I "subluxed My pattella" ie dislocated my kneecap years ago and can remember the sickening feeling and sight of My kneecap popping outwards. Most reply's here are correct in saying straightening of the leg is the way to go. Although the kneecap can occasioanly flip over on the way out...
