What did you do TO / WITH / FOR your bike today!

Pumped the tyres up, chucked it in the car and went to my local trails, did the short loop, hadn't been for a ride in two months. Felt slow but my legs were stronger in the climbs than I expected, which was weird.

Elbow pads the new knee pads?

I've had a few decent get offs on road and off. Way back in the day we used to wear a half shell helmet and gloves, got gravel/road rash, bruised elbows and knees.. Nowadays I have IXS Flow knee and elbow pads, wouldn't wear them for a bike path ride, always on for a trail ride. Hardly know...

Yeah no contest there, Tassie would be my NZ 😬

Nannup! New (old) MTB destination + Dwellingup + Collie

That has helped keep the population and amount of visitors down, but is changing of late. At the current rate we will soon have too many people like the few east coast cities I've visited.

    The QUICK question thread.....

I used to be pretty free with an 8.5 mm drill bit ‘converting’ Presta rims to Schrader but don’t do it anymore. Never had a rim crack at the valve hole or any other adverse effects but am running carbon rims now and err on the side of caution. Opening the bead is easy enough that I don’t mind...

    The QUICK question thread.....

Retape the rim. The valve nut has never worked to stop leaking air on its own, for me . Do the soapy water test on the base of the valve first to see if that's the issue. I like to test the air tightness of the wheel by fitting the tyre with no sealant, pump it up to 50 psi leave it overnight...

    The QUICK question thread.....

Sometimes OEM stainless spokes are prone to doing that, I had to rebuild quite a few wheels on certain Shogun models sold by the shop I worked in, warranty repairs the distributor got billed for. Had it happen on my 2019 Fuel EX with the brake side of the rear wheel in the set of spokes loaded...

    Black Friday sales 2024

A few Shimano goodies turned up from Pushys today, most interesting to me are some shoes, a pair of GR9's ($90 on special) and a pair of GF6, not on special but the SHIMANO10 code helped. My old Giro Riddance shoes are my first pair of proper flat pedal shoes, I like them but couldn't find...

    Prescription riding glasses

It's gunna vary depending on your eyesight correction needs - I started needing glasses for reading in my mid 40's, hardly used them for the first couple of years but now at 56 I wear multifocals all the time because it's easier than taking them on and off. I have to wear safety glasses at work...

    Crank length changes, your experiences?

Got some XT 165mm cranks from Bikeinn - dunno how I got around the geoblocking BS, couldn't find any in Oz though.a Had my first ride with them the other day and couldn't feel any difference pedalling torque wise but definitely reduced pedal strikes. Not the face plant type of pedal strike but...

Same - but I’m starting to make them lately !

What did you do TO / WITH / FOR your bike today!

I thought the rut I plowed was a bit photo worthy 😬 Forgot the more legit thing to post : first ride with 165mm cranks. Couldn’t feel much difference pedalling but definitely had less brushes with the ground and when going over log obstacles etc. 35mm rise bars (up from 20mm) felt good.

What did you do TO / WITH / FOR your bike today!

crashed it 🤦🏻 happened very quickly when I put the front wheel on the outer edge of a corner which was soft like sand but looked like hardpacked dirt. No damage to me or bike, a few sore muscles in my left arm which I landed on. Had to smack the bars back into alignment. Not much riding done...

    Confessions from the fuckwits

It needs about 5mm of offset as the lock ring is recessed from the inner face of the chain ring. I rang the LBS to see what they had in stock, they didn’t have any but offered to do it up for me so I bought a new SLX chain while I was there.

    Confessions from the fuckwits

Back here again…..excitedly unpacked my new XT 165mm cranks and SLX chainring to assemble/install. I’m usually a bit smug about having the right special tool for things but the bushidos got me with the lock ring🤦🏻 my el cheapo unShimano BB tool wont fit over the BB axle. Now contemplating trying...

What did you do TO / WITH / FOR your bike today!

165mm cranks just arrived 🤗 didn’t go for a ride this morning due to feeling a bit fluey and needing a rest after a big weekend of target shooting competition. Took out second place in my category so I’m pretty stoked about that. Also have OneUp 35mm rise bars to fit so that’s what I’m doing for...

    Confessions from the fuckwits

Ok last week I discovered that when I wound the pins in shorter on my first proper flat pedals and then realised that might make the risk of slipping and copping a shin strike worse, I wound them back out again - I missed one side so one of the four sides wasn't quite as grippy as the rest. This...

Bike came with left front brakes? Grr

Like teK said, hose swap and opportunity to optimise hose lengths and routing. A good shop would sort that for you without charge, if it was me doing presale check/assembly I would have done it then or at least asked the question. Online purchase at a sharp price will tend to cut some corners...

    The QUICK question thread.....

Ive been using multifocals (safety glasses paid for by my employer) for about 8 years now, wear them for MTB riding and don't have any issues even with them being photochromatic and going in and out of shade/sunlit areas. They are mainly for reading, not distance. Nice to have when the tyres...

What did you do TO / WITH / FOR your bike today!

I've been feeling the weight on my hands is a bit much lately, have gone as short as possible on the stem, next I'll move the seat forward a bit. Reluctant to resort to bars with rise but if that's what it takes.... Out for an early ride this morning, making it three rides this break with a...
