NSW Free Avid Elixir 3 brakes

Basic design is the same for all Elixir models, main differences are in materials & details.

    QLD Shimano caliper piston

No. Same general design, but different bits. 987 is a one-piece magnesium casting, 785 is a two-piece aluminium assembly. Pistons should be the same though

    Neither.

Replacement for XT M772 Rear Derailleur?

Only real difference is in the materials; where the XT is all aluminium, the Alivio has some steel bits in the body links.

Replacement for XT M772 Rear Derailleur?

It's really quite good, especially for a lower mid-range bit of kit.

How long is a bike good for?

Bikes will last a bloody sight longer than the mucketing boffins would like you to believe.......

    Recommend a carbon XC rim

    Yes, USD.

    Recommend a carbon XC rim

M623 or something like that..... 26" x 23mm internal, not sure if they still do that narrow, but definitely offer wider.

    Hayes HFX-9 worth rebuilding?

Hell, even Avid Juicies almost seem good compared to Hayes!

    Recommend a carbon XC rim

I've been extremely happy with the Chinese Carbonal rims I've been on for around 4 years now.

Replacement for XT M772 Rear Derailleur?

A better match is SRAM 9-sp. shifter to 11-sp. derailleur from either camp. ;)

Replacement for XT M772 Rear Derailleur?

Newer model 9-sp. still uses the same pull ratio as always, 10, 11 and possibly 12-sp. (not sure on that one yet) are each different.

    Confessions from the fuckwits

I've told you before that the OD2 bearing needs a matching cup because it's slightly bigger than the standard bearing! Head tube bores are the same for both.

    Little Things You Hate

    SRAM didn't do HG-compatible 11 & 12-sp. straight of the bat either..... ;-)

Replacement for XT M772 Rear Derailleur?

Any Shimano 8/9-sp. derailleur will work. Shimano still keep supply of some older-generation parts, so you may still be able to find a new M772 or M592 Deore.

Holden out of Oz in 2017

The Germans used to do the opposite.... Take the badges off M5s so they did look like ordinary shopping trolleys, and then blow the doors off everything. :p

TAS Shed rationalisation. Brake pads, drivetrain bits, seat posts, freebies

Coiuld be keen on the XT 10-sp. triple rings; spares never go astray. :-)

    WTB Shimano 9spd Rear Derailleur

Got a 9-sp. XT going spare.

How many extra links to start with for the chain (11 speed)

If your cage length is too short, you're up the shit whichever chain-measuring method you use.
