I'm not 100% sure, but I think the M hub can only run 15mm front and has 28spokes front and rear, whereas the MX can be converted between 15/20mm front, and has 32 spokes...

Thanks mate; just fitted orange esi grips to take it to 11. Haven't tried plus yet; will give it a razz on the 2.4" 29ers for a bit first. I'm pretty sure a smaller plus tyre will fit, maybe not 3"...
