09 Ashes

After an honestly shitful day yesterday, our bowlers are finally finding some form, pretty much thanks to Hilfy but we're definately still in this.

Now that we can actually get England's tail out we're looking good to bat easily before lunch.

Ok, time to bump this thread back up..
What do you guys reckon about Phil Hughes? He's failed in his last 5 innings. Personally I just think he needs a bit more time to adjust to test cricket, and there's no way that Shane Watson will replace him as opener.
And if we lose to Hamtonshire(I think that's who we're playing), our Ashes campain(sp) is well and truly over.

Exactly, I went to take a piss before the start of play and when I came back and looked at the score I though I was a lot more drunk than I actually was.

Third wicket this morning falls as I type, Ponting gone. Onions gets another one.

Wickets falling regularly. This is ridiculous.

8 for 203 at lunch. England regaining the Ashes is a very likely outcome IMO.

YEp and fifth test massive crash, about every 15mins the Aussies lost a wicket.

I am baffled (being a sporting person but not a heap of cricket) at how we can dominate the first test so well (it was only the half day of rained that saved them) then 2nd test we were dominated, 3rd test cant remember, then 4th test we absolutley pumped them and now 2 weeks later we are on the end of the pumping. I no comprehenday.

From the bits I've watched over the last couple of days the pitch is fading pretty fast. Batting last is going to suck balls.

Yeah Ponting was very unlucky to lose the toss on this one - I don't like english grounds or pitches - don't call me biased because I know i probably am, but is it just me or does the outcome of the game rely on who wins the toss? Look at lords - sure we kinda deserved to lose - but beautiful batting conditions day1 turned to extremely hard day 2 - and now at the oval, where the pitch falls apart after one session of playing when Aus. does not have a decent spinner...
In Australia at least our pitches in each state/ground are consistent one year after the other - and are not made specially to suit our side - it just seems a bit unfair to me.
/rant (most of that probably didn't make sense at all - I just want the Aussies to play better and win! CMON AUSSIES)

50/50 chance yo:p

Of course the pitch has been prepared to yield a result, imagine if Australia batted first and put on 600, the curator would be hung! Ensuring a result does not mean England is going to win, it gave Australia just as much of a chance and would ensure a thrilling result....there hasn't been a 5th test 'decider' like this for decades so an anticlimactic boring Lords pitch would be sooked about just as much. Sure batting 2nd isn't ideal, but Australia playing 4 quicks obviously rate themselves to bowl England out cheap and they failed.

But seriously Australia only has itself to blame, England took wickets with good bowling, the pitch has had absolutely nothing to do with it so far. Sure its a bit slow, a little bit of variable bounce, but nothing ridiculous, and Im praying for rain because frankly this team is a pack of spineless duds!!!

Ponting-shit, hasn't made runs under pressure for ages
Hussey-Absolute rubbish, to drop Hughes but keep him is a disgrace
Johnson-Trash, gives a few dirty looks and bowls some bouncers and he's apparently 'back in form' I don't think so, he looks crap.

Micheal Clarke has had a great series though until last night, his batting really kept us in the series, also surprised with Hilfenhaus, thought he was a dud as well but hes been a consistant performer.

BRING ON THE RAIN!!!

Agree with the top half...I'm just pretty annoyed at the team atm, and how the english are such bloody snobs.
I do stop agreeing with you bagging Ponting, Hussey and Johnson.
Ponting; I wish everyone would give this guy a break. He went from having a team of Mcgrath, Warne, Gilly, Haydos, Langer, Marto, Lee, to the current team. The drop in skill level and experience of the players underneath him is incredible. Look at Alan Border/Tubs - they didn't win every series they played in overseas did they? Ponting so far has done exceptionally well in my books - has he only lost the two test series overseas (eng 2005 and eng 2009 (yes...i don't really see them getting 546...) - correct me if i'm wrong.
You can't drop the captain of the team because he hasn't had a recent run of centuries that we are used to from him...Said to be in a form slump last year still got around 900 runs for the year (again- correct me if i'm wrong - i'm going off the top of my head).
Hussey - yes he needs to be dropped like Clarke was.
Johnson - When he fires - they all fire. When he doesn't - they don't. I think that means he is vital in the team. And a good future asset - get him used to bowling in England.

Lets hope we can put up some sort of resistance.

Alright Ill clarify, but I've had this opinion for a long time:

Ponting is a crap captain, great player yes, but crap captain. When we had a great team he was still a crap captain but the talent of the team was so much that it didn't matter at all. I would have liked to see Warne captain, he would have been a lot more attacking and take the game to the opposition, Ponting sits back and waits for things to happen....and if bad things happen he reacts poorly.

Our current team is much better than Englands imo, especially since they don't have Pietersen.....I think a combination of poor selection, poor performances from our big players, and also Pontings poor captaincy are to blame.

I think he should step down, focus on his batting and let Micheal Clarke take charge, Clarke seems to have a much better cricket brain.

PRAYING FOR RAIN

TO be fair, Warne would have been the best captain by a mile. But, there was no way in hell he'd be given the captaincy. Aus cricket would have gone down the shitter all over the world because of his inability to keep his bat and ball where they should be...

Spot on i reckon, although i'd like to see Katich as captain for a little while before Clarke gets his turn.

I haven't even beenn able to watch much of this series at all. :(

I've never really liked Ponting as a captain either, though his defs got talent as a player. Don't really like his attitude towards the game either, 'win at all costs ... whinge at all loss', he justs seems to be a bit of a whinger. (IMO)

Agree with you completely there, Clarkey is fitting the mould of captain perfectly!

Anyone willing to offer me odds on an Australia victory 5 down, i can't seem to get odds off sportsbet for such a result, apart from for the win, and it's not paying enough to justify the outlay?

GODDAM Ponting just run out. That is a disasterous blow, just when i was sensing a good chance of causing a major upset in this test.. Better go to bed now. Pissed off.
