I agree but he's a competent mechanic and has already replaced inner/outer. He set on replacing the rear derailleur so I'm humouring him by buying one to see how it goes. Have a cassette for him already.

What derailleur is it?
The lower tier ones develop a lot of play where it attaches to the hanger and shifting goes to shit on them. Can fix this by changing the bolt to a top tier one that has o rings (I think), or I've fixed it with a sacrificial plastic spacer that removes the slop.
