2000ish Marzochhi Bomber Z1 Preload adjuster query

Hi All,
My 2000ish Marzocchi Z1s are having some dampening issues, so I opened them up to find a metal tube on one leg, and not the other (pulled the dampening adjusters). The picture shows the tube.

Should there be a tube on both sides, or no tube at all? Looking at the manual indicates what I believe is called the "external preload adjuster". I believe that metal tube is that part. Any ideas?

Mr Greenfield
there is a blog written by the UK brand manager Dan Jones for marz here: http://marzocchiworkshop.blogspot.com.au/

service manual for Z1 bombers: http://marzocchiworkshop.blogspot.com.au/2013/02/service-guide-z1-bomber-1997.html

Dan states "Found this service manual, these were actually included in the original owners manual. This is nice as the service for the cartridge type fork hasn't really changed over the years and can be considered a definitive guide for all Z1 models 1997-2002."

The exploded view shows damper (with adjustment knob) out the RHS leg. So you should only have a tube out of the RHS, guessing everything was symmetrical and swapping things into the left isn't a big deal.
