I'm currently out looking for a new BB for the Trance and I really am not sure what I have to buy!
there's a million different BB standards and I am lost.
I read that the Trance is a BB71, but I also read that BB71 is the same as a BB91 and to me that doesn't sound right at all..
so I'm putting the question out to the Rotorburn community, what BB do I buy?

Thanks!

Press fit BB91

The BB71 is an OEM item from memory. One more issue is fitting it, it seems the new press fit brackets need to be fitted with a specialist tool.

The BB71 is XT level and the BB91 XTR level. Price difference is small, and many retailers only stock the 91, so I'd go BB91. To be precise, you need a SM-BB91-41A.

I recently replaced the press-fit BB on my Trance, and I found the right tools made it simple. The lower piece is to knock the old cups out, and the middle contraption is to install the new cups.

Is the middle contraption DIY?
Half & half.

The two machined cup presses came with the extracter tool as a set - Park BBT-90.3, which costs about 50 bucks.

But they assume you have a headset press to use with them, which I don't, so I bought a piece of 5/8" threaded rod and some nuts and washers from Bunnings instead.

Works well!

I don't understand the move to press fit BBs......someone to explain it to me. How are they any better than the more convenient threded kind?

thanks for that everyone! I still think its just silly having 2 different named 'standards' when indeed they are the same thing, one just being a little more 'exotic' than the other.

that tool definitely looks interesting!
I'll probably get it installed by a bike shop anyway since it will be part of the overhaul

Not really different 'standards', just Shimano offering a range of different price points/levels like they do with most components. The ones with higher number will (normally) use better materials and be lighter, but also cost more. So, in press-fit MTB BBs they offer three choices - BB51 which is Deore level, BB71 which is SLX/XT level, and BB91 which is XTR level. They are interchangeable, so its your choice...

All I can say is choose your LBS carefully. I do all my own maintenance because frankly, I can do it better than the muppets in my LBS (and lots of other reasons like I enjoy it, and I want to know how to do it for when it breaks in the middle of nowhere). For example, when wanting to change a press-fit BB for the first time I asked my LBS if they could do it. The answer was an enthusiastic yes. I then asked in an innocent way if I could see the special tool they'd use cos I've never seen one before - and you've guessed it, they didn't have the tools. Having been burnt like this once before - when I asked them to face a BB shell, to then watch in horror as they set to it with a file, this time I decided to invest $50 in getting the tools and doing the job myself. Of course, there are good and bad LBS like everything in life, and you may be lucky to live near a good one...

for one, you don't really need to make sure that all the threads are spot on. with press fit, its a case of make sure BB area is clean, edges are all clean and flat (faced) and just press in..
I believe they're also lighter but they do force you to buy a new BB if you decide that you want to service it...

alrighty then! that makes so much more sense now. How was I so ignorant?

Yep, i have bb30, and i cant beleive that there is anything better than shimano's screw in outboard bearing system, got 2 bikes outside, XT cranksets, both been on the bikes for 3 years each!

One of the reasons is it's a little easier to make frames. There's more area to make the BB area nice and beefy, thus stiffer. Also gives a little more room for suspension design and it's a slightly more solid interface between cranks and frame.

They are essentially the same bearings just housed within the frame rather than outside. Think of it as internal vs. external headsets.
