Just got my new 2012 reign 1 - sick bike, will be used for all mtn style riding (i come from dh background).

As it doesnt have tabs etc for chain guide - i have followed threads and seen people put some on with modifications etc. I am prob going to drop the large ring off front amd maybe run a bashguard. Just wondering if anyone else with reign does it and has it helped with stopping chain dropping off? (i thought i read post from dozer that he did it but cant find the post again). Any advice appreciated

If you find that the chain is falling off when on the biggest chain ring, your 'High' limit screw is probably a touch out on the f/der.

Best way to fix is to get bike into some sort of stand ( or even hang seat of something so the wheels are off the ground)
Put the chain into the 10th gear on the rear and biggest ring in the front.
Check the gap between the outer plate of the f/der and the chain, there shouldnt be more then a 3mm gap.
Adjust this gap by screwing either in or out on the 'H' limit screw. Only adjust about an 8th turn and re check.!

Then while keeping the chain in the biggest chain ring, select the r/der to the 1st gear. Now move back up to the f/der.
There wiill be a noise coming from the chain angle, however make sure the chain isnt rubbing on the inner plate of the f/der.

When installing a bash guard, all you need to do to make the l/h shifter a 2 speed is screw the 'H' limit screw in until the correct spacing is achieved on the second chain ring.

The problem I have found with mine is the chain drops off the bottom side of the ring (nothing to do with front mech trim). I generally ride in the middle ring and when going through the rough sections the chain drops to the granny ring. Pain in the arse when you start to pedal again and everything clunks back into place. IF you could get something like the MRP x2 that would be ideal. Might get one and do some mods.

K-Edge MTB Chain Catcher

Run a bashie of some sorts in place of your big ring and one of these K-Edge MTB Chain Catchers on the inside of your granny....just remove your RH BB cup, take out a BB spacer, place chain catcher where spacer was, tighten RH BB cup back up and ensure that the chain catcher is at approx the 12 o'clock position.

IT'S A PRESS FIT BB!!!

This is the thing that is causing all the problems. If it was a regular external bb then there would be heaps of solutions that would work really well. With the press fit bb and no iscg mounts it really does rule out everything. Custom is the way forward until someone comes out with a specific product.

Unfortunately there's no external BB on the 2012 Reign, just press fit with no ISCG tabs. What were they thinking.

Edit - beaten to it.

Yep this seems to be the problem - the bb. I having same issues as your prev post. Also thinking mrp guide but seems a fair few people hav issues with the 2*chain guide. Such a fun bike, shame the chain guide is such an issue.
Might just try replacing big ring with bash guard and see if makes a difference.

I just had a look at it and I think I've found the solution. I'm going to model up and then 3d print a iscg adapter so I can mount up a standard guide (will then have to get it CnC'd up). Might take me a few weeks (bit busy at the moment) but I'll certainly give it a crack. I just want to be able to run a roller to wrap the chain around the chain-ring a bit more. Maybe i should design something from scratch...Hmmm...

Edit: has anyone got the links to the other threads on MTBR/ pinky on this? Might see what they've done first then look at moving forward from there.

dangler

what about a specialized dangler, or similar? What's old is new again and all that. Don't expect you can buy then separately yet but maybe you could knock one up?

That looks like an interesting product. Can anyone here vouch for it's performance? I'm having issues with chain drops on my Reign 1 (2010). Luckily I have an external bb. Was looking also at the MRP 2X, haven't found anywhere (online) that sells them yet though. Are they available yet?

Thanks - had a look at them. All the reviews do not seem too positive though. Back to square one
Yeah, I doubt it would clamp your chainstay at all but that could be modified. I used to run one on my hardtail back in the day, mainly to stop chain slap with early Shimano derailleurs. It's probably still in my parts bin at home if you want to try it out. I'll never use it.

My mate has a widget on his reign super happy with it, I don't think he has droped a chain once. I also have a widget on a norco fluid and am also super happy with it and have never droped a chain once.

I have a blackspire stinger with an E13 turbocharger running a 2x9 drivetrain. No hassles, no chain drops or slapping, runs quiet. Not on a Reign though, I have an external BB so it was easy.

If you search for 'cable tie chainguide' or something like that on pink bike there's lots of discussion of how to build dodgy chain guides like the specialized one out of cable ties, cotton reels, old jockey wheels and other random bits of stuff you might find in the second draw of your kitchen.

Making the reign AM

Just reviving an old post, have a 2011 Reign II.. just replaced the drivetrain 2X10 with 24t granny & 38t middle ring ( big gap i Know but its working) & hope bash gaurd with X9 mid cage on the rear.. This seems to have fixed the chain drop on those downhill runs.. just made up a alloy bracket that drops from the chain stay with a blackspire stinger roller, which has stopped the chain-slap & makes for a nice quiet run.. Although, I had to cut out the inside of the roller to make it wider, so it could run in a true line to the derailleur..

Tried to post some photos but they're to large, I'll take some more tomorrow & put them up.. Hope this helps other reign owners..
