Sounds like I'm trying out a DHF then! And I take back any nice things I ever said about Speccy tyres. Rubbish.
Careful now, you're sounding like Jared Graves feels.

What spesh tyres were you using? Some only suffer a small weight penalty for the grid casing... I think the purgatory was a whopping 50g more. Butcher and slaughter are about 150-200g more, but still worthy tyres in my opinion.

I'll be going to spesh's new plus size grid tyres as soon as they are out. $70 for a 27.5x2.8 from spesh, and $120 for the same from maxxis is hard to swallow.
Ground Control GRID. Ripped a knob so bad I got covered in sealant. Back of my legs looked like a weird porno money shot.

I've never had a problem with Maxxis. Only went with the Spec because they were two for one. You get what you pay for.

Damn. I'm the first person to say go maxxis, I was their number one fan until their plus sized tyres got a very plus sized price increase!

Currently riding some schwalbes, which I regret.

Those who are running a Minion DHF, are you running a 2.5? Not too big?

First ride on the Aggressor yesterday. Very happy with it. Not super fast but grip for days. Definitely felt the extra weight on the back but once used to it was all good.

2.5 DHF is a big tyre. Side knobs stick out from the casing a decent amount compared to a 2.3 which is very similar.

On i30 wheels, the 2.3 butcher is about 58mm casing and tread. 2.5 DHF is about 61mm casing and 64mm tread.

Learnt the hard way today that the Purgs simply slide on wet checkerplate. I think butter would grip better on ice that had been lubed with grease.

Looking at those tyres lined up made me think of a motocross bike. The 29x2.5 on the front and the 27.5x3.0 on the back.

I just can't bring myself to add almost a kg of rotating weight to my trail bike. 1kg tyres are obscene. Am I missing something here- when did we all need 2.5 tyres at over a kg?
Considering I never have a problem with my 600gram tyres I can't see the need to go big and heavy.
I really feel like I am missing out on something. Perhaps I don't ride hard enough but at 100kgs and ride everywhere others do- I thought I would be a prime candidate for strong and grippy rubber.
I so want to be with the cool kids but shudder at carting all that weight.

Your 600 gram tyres don't corner very well.

Cornering is teh funnest part.

600 gram tyres would likely die in the carpark at my local... it all depends on what you ride, and how you ride it. local tracks are very rocky, and i like to think i have a decent pace.

i've already slashed a 3 ride old snakeskin knobless nic. spesh control felt squirmy to me, maxxis exo is the only one to stand the test of time so far.

do i need a >1kg tyre? (29x2.5 EXO TR 3C DHF is 1,005g, 29x2.3 EXO TR 3C DHR II is 825g) probably not, but i love knowing i can pick any line and emerge out the other end. these scrobble tyres have me babying them to keep the knobs attached.

Is that what I'm missing????
You're missing lots of shit JD. this is a 29er thread - first up, 29ers are shit. Second up, 600g tyres are shit. Third up, you missed the shuttle bus on the 1200g tyres - that shit just compounds all the other shit.

How do you cope with yourself?

800g 2.3 grippy tire on the front to go around corners. 600-700g 2.3 tire on the back to follow the grippy front.

1kg tires for trail riding is perplexing

Make peace with it JD, after all this is the XC/cross country forum 29er Tyre Thread, not the red bull rampage super gravity enduro tyre thread. God only knows how yours and my 100kg frames get away with such foolery on rocky stuff like youies/castlemaine/redesdale/beechworth, especially on 29ers? You still running old school narrow (sub 35+mm) rims like me too I suspect?

Yes stan flows

I just don't have any problems with my Specailizwd control tyres but rather intrigued with the enduro tyres
I picked up a Maxxis DHF in the shop yesterday and just couldn't bring myself to carry it to the counter. We obviously don't ride hard enough.
I would like to try a firmer tyre on the rear for cornering and also to see if I can run less air pressure.

Rather conscious of running too large a tyre on normal rims (24mm). Won't it roll? Or do the firmer sidewalls limit it. I dream about running sub 30 psi in my tyres
