No on further inspection with calipers Duck you are right its more like 41mm so probably it wont work , back to straight steerers .
Bugger there were some nice ones available.
Are the cups machined or pressed into the frame? Machined is integrated, pressed is semi.

Bingo, smack out the lower cup & bung in an EC, and hello tapered fork! You don't need to do anything to the top assembly unless the bearing is munted.

Wow I might be having a win due to Duck's superior knowledge ?
They are indeed pressed in and went to lbs and they are familiar with this hack and can press out the lower race and replace it cos I am pretty sure a tapered fork will fit .
There is even a nice Specialised carbon fork for sale in For Sale.
Wooohoo.

Saga continues, lower external cup 1.5 ins and bearing worked well but would nt you know it , I went and bought a Giant carbon road fork .
I didnt realise the top of the road forks was OD2 ie 1.25 inch like their mtbikes , bastards .
Bike shop says it is hard to get a 1.25 bearing to fit ?
Is that correct , if so , an external top bearing should be possible ?
Thanks for replies .

Just goes to show what a wank head sets standards are esp for road.
I have every sort of headset from old threaded 1 inch up to a huge integrated tapered and I honestly cant feel any difference.

You will need a Giant MTB OD2 headset, and not use the lower assembly. The road OD2 is integrated, and the depth of the bearing and the shell bevelling is fairly critical, which makes dropping it into a random cup a bit hit & miss.

MTB OD2 is a ZS44 semi-integrated, so will fit your frame, but you will need to change to the included cup, as the bearing is slightly larger than a 1 1/8" one and won't fit your existing cup.

Bear in mind you will also need a new stem and spacers.

Thanks
New stem and spacers yes , as I am building the bike up as a gravel bike from scratch .
Other gravel bikes are very old school and cant take big tyres ie > 32 or 35 mm
So I should go with the mtbike one ZS44 that is semi integrated ?

Thanks, I noticed I asked the same question back in 2015 when building up my wife's SC current duallie, there must have been lots of OD2 forks around then but I didnt buy one. https://www.rotorburn.com/forums/in...-4-frames-will-they-fit-normal-frames.290000/
This time I bought one by accident as the seller didnt say anything + I didnt ask.
Never realised they were a thing for road carbon forks, seems pointless but that is how big companies screw us up.

Follow up : finally I tracked down the OD2 upper headset which now fits as well as the external race for the bottom.
Just did the Central west NSW trail over 7 days so inspired to get this gravel bike thingy ready for the next trip .
Next problem I didnt anticipate is the fork has flat mount attachments so to put a post mount caliper on I need an adapter ?

So is this what I need ?

Shimano SM-MA-F160P/D 160mm Front Disc Brake Adaptor
