7sp and 9sp interchangeable?

I'm about to pick up a replacement rear wheel off some guy locally as I'm converting to disc brakes and need hubs with the mount. Just wonder should I be concerned as to weather it's 7 or 9 speed or are they interchangeable?
 
8 and 9 speed hubs are but for seven speed you will need a spacer i think

but chains and cassettes aren't interchangeable they are different sizes
 
so can fit 7 speed on 8/9 speed hub with use of spacer. but can't fit 8/9 speed on 7 speed hub?

correct. It will take a bit of mucking around to get the 7 speed cassete working properly(getting spacers in right position) on a 9 spd standard hub.
 
Yeah, it'll work. Just run a spacer behind the cassette.


Sheldon Brown can tell you spacing between the centres of each cog, and thus how thick the spacer will need to be, but I'll let you go looking for that ;)

Don't start pulling the cassette apart though, as this ^ seems to imply.
