Okay , here’s my advice .
You can’t do a half arsed “ I just want some cash money brah “ kind of business - you are in business or you are just fuckerising around .

In saying that , there is very good money to be earned $80k plus but it is very hard work .
Don’t involve yourself in Airtasker or any of the ilk - why are you giving money away ?

Advertise in local paper ,put a sign on your car , do your lawns and gardens in high vis with a sign written vehicle out the front - this will work faster than any other promo ......letterbox drops are a giant waste of effort .

My history with this kind of venture is sound - I did it for 6 years .
And yes I bought a franchise - took me 6 months to earn the initial purchase price back ( over summer )
My average week was 25 hrs , average earnings pa approx 80k .
In winter I still worked , doing gardening and handyman - in summer it was flat out keeping up with the bloody lawns and gardening !

Best job in the world , but physically exceptionally demanding - my hips and knees are buggered .
Yes , you could structure yours days around children / lifestyle .
Most people are honest and will pay , real estate agents are proper karnts , some customers like to bargain - walk away , if there is a barrier to paying in the beginning- wait till the bill needs to settled - never goes well !

Go for it , with eyes open - very rewarding , always achieve a result at the end of the day .

I like the idea of fuckerising around.
At present due to being made redundant ( my job after being a lawnmower man ) i am "fuckerising around ' in the words of my wife - mind you we just finished working together for the last 7 yrs !
So my day consists of
Walking the dogs at 6.15am
Coming home and collecting my thoughts - talking to the dogs
cook bacon and eggs
ride my bike for a few hours - I've done nearly 400km in 3 weeks thru the scrub
watch youtube
cook dinner
read a book
repeat !

But the party will lend as I'm getting restless - i quite like working so are presently searching for things that appeal to me !

Repair man on new houses, so many only builders 3 months servicing. Huge killing in there to made..old school letter drop with magnet to the new estates..

Or adding different handles, soft close hinges, decking etc so much demand on tweaks like this. A post hand over man.

Handy job man maybe?

I imagine I'll get tarred with that brush quite soon if I don't show some progress around the house, or towards a new income!

Still, I didn't start this post with a view to creating a full time job out of airtasker. I view it as an opportunity to be productive, provide a little income in the short term until future work is found and work around 'life'. I don't have the drive necessary to build a business and run it myself.

If you don't need the cash that bad, what about simply learning a new skill/trade? I've personally always wanted to do welding - next redundancy and I'm heading to tafe.

Just a follow up. I’ve been quite selective and picked up 3 jobs, offering on about 8-10.

First job was a waste of time and effort. Mowing and snipping for $60 (less fees) figures I’d dip my hand in to get a review and ended up about $12 per hour. The yard was 80% knee deep weeds and took 2.5hrs of constant hard effort. Still, I said I’d do the job for the price and stuck with that, admittedly not overly happy about it Lesson learnt

Second job was much better. Installing posts. I bid over the persons budget, but under some others by a fair percentage and ended up with around $25/hr and a good review.

Third job was again just over the persons budget and for 1.5hrs well worth my time, especially since I was already in the area for another job.

So, lessons are: ask for more details on the job, be selective in your offers, don’t be too concerned if your offer is over the budget and don’t expect all jobs to be a winner.

I'm in a similar position of being a bit bored with work, and fancy a change to do something for myself. However, as it's likely to be manual work (bored of working in an office), I'm mindful of advancing years and not really wanting to break myself.

So my idea would be to find something (and here's the challenge) that your average Joe punter can't do themselves, or if they can, you can do much better and quicker with specialized equipment. Obviously there would be an investment in said specialist equipment, but you could then move into 'working smart' rather than 'working hard' territory.

Some more common examples of this would be high pressure cleaning / steam cleaning, oven cleaning, man with a van etc - but I'm sure there must be other ideas along these lines. Any ideas?

Of course working smarter is better, the hard part is finding a niche and establishing a business to suit it. So far, I’ve been reasonably busy, but I got a ‘not what you know but who you know’ help into a few days as a general assistant at a school - great job for the few days I’ve done it.

Man with a van seems quite competitive. , stuff like pressure cleaning could work, but making enough to recoup the purchase price of said equipment could take a while.

I'll add be an arborist/tree lopper. With councils red tping the crap out of trees nowadays, anyone with half a brain and aborist qualificaton is in high demand. I'll know because I just dumped a lot of money into one.
