All Mountain Tyres

I'm pretty sure the answer is 'Whatever is on sale that week'.

Schwalbe just launched two new radial tyres -

Albert and Magic Mary.

Albert is more suited to hard pack/rocky, while MM is the same but constructed differenty.

They're claiming 30% more contact patch at the same pressure.

4400km on my ebike, these Continentals went on at around 2000km (rear replaced 3 weeks later) and been there nearly 12 months. Supersoft Argotal on the front and soft on the rear, I decided they needed changed a few rides ago.

2400km is the longest by a long way that I've ever put on a set of tyres. I had a dodgy sidewall on one at the beginning and it got warranted but not even a puncture since then.

I had the new ones for several months but they only started looking tatty in the last few rides, side knobs were looking average.

Knew they were super tight and that I should have pre mounted the rear on a rim to bed the bead in to assist with the insert fitting, no way that airliner was allowing me to mount the tyre, so gave up and took it out and will fit it in a few weeks.

COTFW: Bloody 6 bolt rotor... cant be bothered unbolting it, she'll be right. Muscling the tyre on, pulled the wheel towards me while applying a lot of downward pressure, slipped off and slammed the bench, bent one whole side of the big 220mm rotor about 10-15° into the spokes 😞

Any plans to try out the new Schwalbe radial tyres?

Hold that.

Was looking at ordering some Kryptotals for more hardpack over summer as the large knobs and spacing of the Argotals get scuffed off on hard trails with nothing to bite on, better with something with more knobs for hard pack grip.

Ended up deciding on Alberts for something different. Will see how they last as the Conti's are the longest lasting soft and supersoft I have ever used.

I want new tyres again. I've decided that my current setup is overkill, they're draggy and don't suit the conditions (or at least my style of riding).

But what should I choose? Back to Maxxis Exo/Exo+ DHR II? I could consider buying from ze Germans if I can also order some gravel stuff too..

Humour me, what's your current setup?

Front: Magic Mary Soft Super Trail
Rear: Hans Dampf Soft Super Gravity

Both weight approx 1,300g and as things stand, I think I need a tyre more suited to hardpack and loose over hard conditions and without the heft.

29 or 27.5?
what wheels? ID? OD?
Total bike + Rider + gear weight?
It really depends how much grip you like at the front, and how hard you are on tyres, IMO
Schwalbe
You could go something like a rock Razor or Wicked Will rear in a Super trail or Snakeskin Carcass.
Front tyre I don't like to skimp on grip, so it depends how badly you want to cut weight.
You could just move the HD to the front and put a RR, WW or equivalent on the back and see how that goes for a bit.

If dropping weight is the ultimate goal, then you could get some XC tyres, Maxxis Ikons or Vittoria Barzos or Mezcals (I have no experience with Ikons or the Barzos/Mezcals, but they seem to have been around for years)

I bought an Onza Svelte 29x2.2 and Maxxis pace rear, and they seem to roll fine on hardpack, but no Idea how they would go on loose over hard.

The Loose over hard and Hardpack kind of describes what I've found at the you yangs in VIC. That being said, I did find the odd sandy section of trail and the feeling of starting to lose the front end is really not awesome at all, so I tend to run a grippy front like a Magic Mary, even if it's a bit draggy.

Rock razor I had most of the side knobs completely torn off after 300kms . This was the addix version which supposedly fixed this issue.

Fairly impressed with the Hutchinson griffus 2.5 up front , it's about 1000 grams and rolls reasonably well, especially through chop as the casing has such a nice ride.

Unfortunately there aren't many tyres in the 800 gram all rounder range anymore but previously enjoyed the original Wild AMs and XR4s . Spesh ground control could be an option

Pirelli Scorpions are another choice. Kitchen scales had Enduro Hardwall R 1123gms rear and 910gms Enduro M front. I really like them 320km so far, grip well, roll well set up tubeless easily. Might put a Trail R on the back which supposed to be a little faster rolling for summer now the tracks are drying out.

I had the Scorpion Trail on the Ragley and really liked them. Since I bought them cheap from Wiggle they changed the compound a bit and they're even better now apparently.

29 or 27.5? 29 F&R

I like grip like everyone but it's mainly on hardpack and loose over hard.

Around Smithfield I've ridden -

DHF / DHR II (first proper mountain bike - punctured the Exo DHR II)

DHF / Rekon - (Went for rolling speed - enjoyed a lot)

Rekon / Rekon (Went for more rolling speed - sketchy)

Pirelli Trail F&R (Durable and good rolling speed/grip for my limited speed)

DHR II / DHR II (OEM Canyon Spectral tyres - sold with Nukeproof wheels because I couldn't be arsed taking them off - regret)

WTB Vigilante / Trail Boss (Loved these tyres but non Tough front punctured. Tough is heavy)

Specialized Ground Control / Fast Trak (Sketchy but picking lines and 'dancing over features was surprisingly fun!)

Magic Mary / Hans Dampf (Winch & plummet - shite for pedalling though)

@Jabubu - Try a Maxxis Aspen Dual-Compound front and Maxxis Shorty 3C MAXX GRIP rear. Nice balance of low rolling resistance up front while still keeping the braking traction from the Shorty you'll need in dealing with the Aspen. 👌

That sounds like the perfect wet weather combo!

Go a Mazza front and Martello rear or Mazza both ends. Decent rolling tyres, 950g in trail compound.
The Mazza/Martello combo comes on Norco Optics and the higher end Fluids.
I still run them on my Deviate with a trail front and enduro casing rear.

Good grip without the big weight penalty. If you aren't hammering rough shale rock sections fast, the trail casing on both sides will be fine.
