[AM] 2014 Giant Trance SX 27.5

Trailstar.

I expect tyres to wear but not rip off in chunks and crack!

Was looking at many demo bikes up at buller all with Maxxis in various stages of wear, and they just wear down all knobs relatively smoothly and don't have chunks breaking off and cracked shoulders etc.

Thanks for the tip.

What about the ring having a countersunk ridge on the inside face for the bolts? If ring is flipped then wouldn't the bolts be too short as the nut would sit further out?

Magic mary on front and DHR2 on rear.

Rode on weekend and the DHR are different to the Rock Razor but overall I like them.

Pros: Much better traction when braking, on technical climbs, sandy/loose on hardpack, and wet treeroots. Rolling speed downhill is about the same.

Cons: More drag uphill on hard pack and road. Rolling speed on flatland is a bit slower.

Other: The tyre when leaned over behaves differently to the Rock Razor. The Rock Razor has increasing grip when leaned over once the big shoulder knobs dig in, but with the DHR2 the grip is more consistent until the point when it finally breaks away.

So with the RR it's more like slip, grip, slip as you are leaning over, but the DHR2 it's grip, grip, slip. Just takes a bit of getting used to but I definitely like them more than the high roller 2, at least on these rims anyway.
I like the sound of the dhr2 might have to grab one of these next
Cheers

Hey Tek,

Questions about your chain guide mod to remove lower roller:

1. did you buy a different taco or just cut it off?
2. have you noticed significantly less pedal drag?
3. has it dropped a chain / slapped heaps?

I have the same bike.. considering the same thing.

Sorry if i missed info on this earlier in the thread..

Cheers

Hey mate,

1. The stock one is an MRG Mini G3. I initially removed just the chain guide part but then I didn't like the roller anyway and the taco cracked without even hitting it (I think it was the degreaser I used). I ran a C-Guide Eco for a while and a Hope ring bashie:

Now I am running the MRP AMG which is just a taco and upper chain guide.

2. No not really, but it is quieter so it must be less drag even if only slightly?

3. Never dropped a chain with the new chain guide. In hindsight the reason why I probably dropped the chain only once after a year of running only the C-Guide and a NW ring, is because the NW ring was worn out. You can hear the chain hitting the chain guide but it's more like a dull knocking sound it's nothing like metal on metal.

Awesome, thanks for the feedback!

I don't know if I should post this in the fuckwits thread?

The fork creaking/crackling sound seemed to came back recently and after turning the fork inside out and re-loctiting the fork crown, it still persisted.

Also the dropper post was starting to spring back slower than normal. I would have to decide a few minutes ahead on the trail and press the switch in advance then wait for the saddle to spring back eventually, ha ha ha. So I pulled it out and gave it a good clean and lube.

Crackling noise now amplified x10000 it was like riding with firecrackers going off.

I never liked this dropper post anyway. How when you pick bike up by the saddle (or get your shorts caught on it), it would spring back up automatically.

So this was was finally an opportunity to buy my favorite dropper that I had on the Anthem, but in its latest version. Specialized Command Post IR. I also transferred over the Crank Brothers Joplin lever I had fitted onto the old bike :D.

Bike is now, silent bliss :tape2:
