Am I crazy for not wearing a helmet.

There have been studies that suggest drivers give more room to cyclists who are not wearing helmets. Apparently when they see a helmet they perceive the cyclist as wearing a full suit of body armour, so reduce the level of care they exercise because they're "protected".

Given the extremely high proportion of a rider's body that is *not* covered by a helmet, a decent stack is going to send a cyclist to ER anyway; allowing us to not wear a magic foam hat won't have a great effect on those stats. And by removing the subversive message that cycling is inherently dangerous, it will hopefully have the effect of getting people off their couches, and thus pose less of a burden on the health system.
Show us the studies.

Tell me which government is going to bring in "helmets are optional now" regulations. Most of them are too shit scared of the next opinion poll (and of getting sued), let alone helmet optional laws.

Also, be our guest and go and test this interesting "suggestion". repeatedly.

While you are at it, feel free to go and join the long term circle-jerk helmet law thread on Bicycles Network Australia forums.

From what I have taken from his rant and other informed statements on the topic, is it's mostly a land access issue (?), not a big issue here in comparison, but in America ebikes my very well result in the closure of many riding destinations, hikers, riders and horse peeps don't get along over there. As in the hikers are very vocal and powerful in their lobbying, any excuse to rid themselves of having to share with the MTB brigade. Probably not so much of an issue, as we don't have the population density and demand on our park lands to the same degree.
You're in so much trouble right now.

First of all, I take a helmet with me if I know I'm going to ride aggressively in certain sections of the trail (and I obviously wear it for those sections) however when I'm riding my normal trails in a super "under control" fashion I just I find helmets super stifling, and restrictive.
In my 15 years of cycling, I can count on two hands the amount of times I've had a stack while riding non-aggressively, and I don't recall ever landing head first.

I'm not talking about playing chicken in traffic here, I'm talking about dirt track cycling.

Am I crazy? Should helmets be worn religiously or is judicious application reasonable?

How many of you ALWAYS wear one?

In my 15 years of drilling, I can count on two hands the amount of times I've had an uncontrolled premature ending while going non-aggressively, and I don't recall where it landed first.

I'm not talking about foreplaying , I'm talking about real dirty stuff.

Excellent.

This thread is a joke.... I'll leave this here.
Is that you JT? Looks like the helmet did it's job. Just wondering if there were any comments on the MIPS factor of the helmet.

Not me luckily... its my good mate.
It's hard to say if MIPS had any bearing on the outcome, but I will say that he had no concussion or brain trauma. He was a very very lucky boy.

Would this have happened with a non MIPS helmet, who knows. All I know is that this Giro with MIPS done exactly what id want from my helmet.

He's just bought another identical one to replace it....

Pretty sure this is pro-helmet?

On a side note:

Kids should be ruthlessly forced to wear a helmet, the young lady hit in Melbourne a week or two ago by that piece of shit hit and runner wasn't. She's critical with head injuries, wonder if it would have reduced the severity if she was wearing a helmet.

Adults, well it's fair enough for people to say they can make up their own mind and decide what there brain is worth to them. However, its the tax payer that ultimately is paying for the treatment and ongoing disability post brain injury. Plus their life or quality of life is now something completely different.

I've worked in the head trauma ward at a major private hospital that essentially specialised in cycling and horse riding brain relate trauma. Horrific stuff, as these people never recover fully, they are mostly young males, and thought they were invincible (no helmet), or some incompetent prick plowed into them in a vehicle. I often, in a very soft polite manner, asked them about their views on helmets, I imagine the answer is obvious.

I am happy to work in palliative care and watch people die over weeks to months, but head trauma in young people is too depressing.

If i remember correctly, Scott Sharples smashed his head open, no helmet in a carpark just fooling around.
