Show us the studies. There have been studies that suggest drivers give more room to cyclists who are not wearing helmets. Apparently when they see a helmet they perceive the cyclist as wearing a full suit of body armour, so reduce the level of care they exercise because they're "protected".
Given the extremely high proportion of a rider's body that is *not* covered by a helmet, a decent stack is going to send a cyclist to ER anyway; allowing us to not wear a magic foam hat won't have a great effect on those stats. And by removing the subversive message that cycling is inherently dangerous, it will hopefully have the effect of getting people off their couches, and thus pose less of a burden on the health system.
Tell me which government is going to bring in "helmets are optional now" regulations. Most of them are too shit scared of the next opinion poll (and of getting sued), let alone helmet optional laws.
Also, be our guest and go and test this interesting "suggestion". repeatedly.
While you are at it, feel free to go and join the long term circle-jerk helmet law thread on Bicycles Network Australia forums.
