Another handlebar width thread

I have recently gone from 785mm to 770mm bars (2nd hand purchase to try a 10mm higher rise), After a couple of rides, I have found that 770 seems to suit me for the winch and plummet riding that I predominately do. The 785mm has always felt fine and the other variable that has changed with the move to 770 is a 50mm stem instead of the original 40mm. I do plan to test out the 770 with a 40mm stem when I get one.

I am just curious as to what width others prefer (and what height they are).

This handlebar Calculator seems to validate the widths I have found to suit me for trail and "enduro" types of riding. Obviously this is not a one size fits all calculation and these types of calculators are notorious for being a bit whack sometimes.


For reference I am 182cm.
 
790mm bars end to end.
20mm rise.
30mm stem.

Looking to go some higher bars but trying to shop second hand where I can at the moment.
30mm stem felt like a huge difference compared to the 40mm. A bit more 'direct' if that makes sense. Tested on same track at Stromlo and felt heaps better and sharper. Probably a bit to sharp on the first few laps but much better once I got used to it. As close to scientific as my research goes.

Edit: Bar calc puts me at 770.

I'm very happy with 740-750mm bars, 40mm rise and 35mm stem.

The calculator suggests 710mm wide bars for my midget 154cm height :D
 
I'm running both bikes with 760cut length One-up alloy bars, 30mm rise with the ergon grips adding 5ish mm per side. But I also tend to hold the grips more inboard than out to the edges, so absolutely hate grips with a flange near the thumbs...I used to be 181cm in high school, the doc says I'm 179 now ..
Bang on the mark according to your highly scientific handlebar calculator...
 
What the fuck? I don't need to worry about shrinking do I? This is surely something relating to the cold in Victoria?
 
I'm 176cm.
Calculator says I should be on 765mm bars for Enduro or 755mm for trail!

Currently running 780mm on both the Enduro and Trail bikes and seem happy with it.
I have much slimmer bars on my XC bike but will shortly be going wider on that too.
 
the calc is basically....
"calcWidth = (height x 2.2) + 375"
a) If calcWidth > 790, handle bar width = 790 + "riding type factor"
b) If calcWidth between 650 and 790, handle bar width = calc width + "riding type factor"
c) If calcWidth < 650, handle bar width = 650 + "riding type factor"
And then round up to nearest 5mm

where "riding type factor"=
- Beginner = -15mm
- Cross Country = -10mm
- Trail = -5mm
- Enduro = 0mm
- Bike Park = +5mm
- Downhill = +10mm
