ACT Best of Canberra Mountain Bike Experience Workshops

Nice one. I've come close a couple of times, but its usually that right tight switchback about halfway up thats just all roots and rocks that undid me...

Yep that’s definitely the crux… I have had a lot of practice on it and (the appropriate) speed and concentration are required. I love that climb - it has the perfect mix of obstacles, short downhills to give you a tiny rest, short steep pinches to get the heart rate up again. Get back there before it’s gone! I think I might ride it tomorrow…

Hoping to get back up there in a car with a mountain bike in spring/early summer.

I got pretty good at and rode it enough times to memorise the blind bits and be in the right gear etc, but that one rocky/rooty switch got in my head and got me every time :)

Will be a shame to lose kowalskis sideshow too - love that run. Some really memorable night rides down that at what feels like warp speed in the tunnel of headlight beams :)

I suspect this is part of the trail rehabilitation pack that was let by PCS a few months back.
Not targeting mtb trails specifically, as there were fire trails and walking trails in the mix as well.
Yeah could be a range of users that was aimed at. I see the gentlest of berms.

I don’t often venture over to Bruce Ridge so I’m not really across what’s been going on there.

Rode MAjura for the first time since about 2021/22 today. REally enjoyed it as I was aiming for something pedally.

I tried Auto Alley for the first time today. Good god, If you think Stairway to Heaven is hard, you need to try this thing; it would make most mountain goats think twice. Was surprised to find a whole new rope course down the bottom too.

We started Auto Alley last ride I did there and bailed because it was hardly visible. Yep it's super tough and I think I've only ever done little sections of it then diverted off.

Auto alley and stairway/rhomper have to be two of my favourite bits of trail in ACT. Unfortunately both seemed to be going unused in the last year or so.

Yeah, certainly doesn't get a lot of traffic. I'd like to be able to ride it, but I don't think my bike is well suited (can't be related to my skill level, of course.....!)

Rode Majura yesterday afternoon, needed to test out my new rear tyre/inserts. Always the stomping grounds for testing out new parts before I commit to bigger rides where the carpark isn't as close. 6 degrees and sleet, I was feeling every ounce of cold.

Also why is the traffic so insane, from just bang on 430pm through to 6ish, Gunners traffic is always bumper to bumper crawling, luckily I get a clear run home going the opposite direction, but if I lived there would definitely need a motorbike would save so much time or a Tesla to watch netflix in peak hour. (You can see the stop lights in my picture just above the front wheel)

Will try and see if we clean it up next time we have a trail day/Dont like my chances of riding up there at the moment with the rake on my bike, might get a few new piercings :D

The masterplan finally got released in August - I've been slack posting it up as it's a little vague. A lot of it concentrates on making the park more usable for people of different skill levels, there are a couple of big flow trails described as adaptive*, and a couple of other bits and pieces that sound like they could be fun but...

Overall it doesn't sound hugely ambitious, but the new trail team are doing a good job of freshening the place up as it is. Would need to see some far more specific trail maps to get a sense of what's intended here.

The most exciting new trail coming up at the moment is the Stromlo to Cotter trail that is funded and starts construction next year. The revitalisation of Stromlo itself in the above masterplan is currently not funded.

ACT Elections are next weekend; Labor and Greens are saying they will fund it and start work in the next election cycle. I emailed the local Liberal candidate to see what their position is and got no response.

Liberal policy is apparently to bulldoze Kowen forest to release land for housing...

* I'm curious to know, is anyone on Rotorburn an adaptive rider, or know or ride with somebody who is?
