bike suggestions - changing out from AM.

Hi all,

I am in search of a new bike, I currently have a 2012 Giant Reign 1 and it has been fantastic - however I have found my riding style has changed over the past couple of years and feel that a XC/Trail bike would be more suitable for my style of riding.

Basically I was hoping I could get your opinions/suggestions.

I am looking to spend $3k maximum and prefer:

- shimano running gear (especially brakes)
- 120mm suspension
- internal cabling.
- 650b wheels

So far in my price range I have found a Giant Anthem SX and a Merida One-twenty 7.500 - I like quite a lot, however was curious as to whether there was something else I should be looking at.

EDIT: local dealers stock norco, lapierre, merida, gt, scott and specialised

Cheers everyone.

Norco Fluid 7.1

Nothing in Lapierre unless you go 29er (Zesty TR)

Scott Spark 750 or 950 depending on wheelsize

plenty more...

Looks like you are after a dually?

I'd be testing the anthem SX and the specialized Camber And choosing one of those 2.

I think at that price point those bikes have the best suspension platform for the price..

Definitley test first.
Have you tried a trance or anything in the 140 category?
By the sounds of it you could be into similar riding as me.
I know the 160 would be more than i want, but the SX just isnt enough.
120 front 100 rear i dont know if thats a trail bike at all, much closer to XC imo.
Keep an open mind to to around 140mm, try out a trance maybe.
Im regretting getting my SX, just not quite enough travel.

My small (probably useless) bit of advice is to look beyond the travel of a bike.
More importantly take a look at some geometries, bb heights, head angle, seat angles, chain stay lengths etc etc.

A reign is a pretty slack Enduro style rig and may have you swayed too far XC.

I ride a high end enduro style bike (66Deg HA) and I'm happy on it. If I was going to change for something more trail orientated I would look at a Trek Fuel EX 29er.
Just so happens theyre on sale

I haven't ruled out the Trance, but I feel that going to something like this is too similar to what I am trying to get away from (Giant Reign). But I do understand what you are saying about the Anthem SX not quite being beefy enough.

If I was going to change for something more trail orientated I would look at a Trek Fuel EX 29er.
Thanks, haven't ruled out the treks - they are a good bike, although I would prefer to buy local

You can get a 2015 730 spark for 3k.

just ask your dealer if he/she can price match?
H.:tape2:
Thanks for the link, I might see if the LBS can get somewhere near that price. A couple mates have Scott Genius's and love the tri-lock feature on the shock, the only thing that concerns me is if I decide to put on a adjustable seat post - there will be a lot of cables!

Are you suggesting the Knolly? It's a nice bike. I was actually trying to look at the bikes on the dhdirect website but the website seems to not exist anymore?

Or just get an Anthem or a Trek Superfly or any number of excellent 100mm travel bikes out there. Just like the 120mm and up category is getting lighter and 'race-able'.....so has the demand for a fun XC race bike meant the 100mm category is now very worthy in the technical stuff.

I myself ride a Trek superfly 100 full carbon. Plenty of jumping and crashing in my last 12mths and I haven't broken it or found myself wanting for travel.

Lots of fun to be had in something like this...
