Black Friday sales 2024

My new helmet from MTB Direct arrived today and... it doesn't suit my head at all :(

Build quality is good and the BOA system is nice but there's too many gaps around the helmet for my liking.

I think I'll sell it or send it back, and stump up the extra for a Giro.

I have a Giro head and my DRT5 is pretty comfortable but took some getting used to have very little padding. Mine feels better the more it is rotated forwards if that helps but the BOA takes care of it positioning in the end.

Unfortunately, there is no point keeping something that doesn't feel comfy.

One of the eyelets on my old trusty Speccy 2FOs went last week, couldn't find any Five Tens that I liked on sale so went back to Specialized and picked up the DH version with a hefty discount.

I loved the old ones, they've lasted me many years so I am hoping the new ones are just as good. TBC as I will test them out tomorrow morning,

I notice the medium size is full price ($265) so that's a no!

I have a Giro Chronicle and that thing was made for my head. I would like something that can hold a pair of sunnies but it's not a deal breaker. Also the Chronicle is discontinued so getting a spare set of pads will be close to impossible. I've been through three sets living up here!

Are all Giro helmets made to the same head shape?

I'm on my second pair (I still have the first as a backup) and I'm pretty sure I'll buy a third when needed. Saw what you like about their bikes, they make some damn fine tyres, shoes and helmets.

Good score. I wondered if Spesh was making way for a new version. grabbed a pair myself. They are a bit different to the previous version, possibly a tiny bit roomier around the toe box, and there is a wee cutout of the stiffer material at the top of the tongue with softer mesh & foam or something so it should be a bit more comfortable there. The tread pattern has also changed. A velcro strap over the instep would be perfection, but the laces hold pretty well and they can be tucked under the elastic strap on the tongue to keep them safe and tidy.

Apparently the US spec DRT5 have a sunglasses holder but we didn't get it due to something within regulations.
Not that I take my glasses off much when riding since I would either:
  1. Forget them.
  2. Sit or tread on them.
  3. Both #1 and #2 in no particular order.
The old adage was you either have a Bell head, which were more rounder in profile or a Giro head, which is more elliptical or some would say eggular. No idea if that this applies these days but Giro helmets in M have also felt good to me. I would put a lot in effort into growing a round head for a classic Bell Moto III though

Why do you need a wee cut out in a shoe? Big boy.

Yeah the newbies are very different. I bought a size up as the last ones were a PITA to put on due to the rubber/wet suit thingy to keep out the water and mud (it bloody worked though). They were ideal for wet muddy trail rides in London and surrounds when I bought them, but here in Oz land, it doesn't matter so much as I (generally) don't go riding in the wet anymore (if I can help it - see previous post about trip to Ourimbah 🤣 ). In pommie land it's either get wet or never hit the trails 😂

I read that TLD are very Giro head friendly but they're a bit pricier. I'm about to order a Giro Source helmet - it's sub 400g and has excellent ventilation - I can use it for gravel road riding too.

Shame, I tried mine for the first time on a ride tonight. The no pads and brow deflector thing would probably be very good up there. First time I didn't have sweat running down my glasses.

Grab a pair of these. No more sweat on the glasses. Just looked and running the same pair since 2015. Washable and they still work. Should really get some new ones…..

Does act as a big sponge and just rely on soaking up sweat?

I sweat like a pig when it's barely warm, and have one of these. I find the silicon strip seals against the skin and acts as a gutter, to divert sweat off to the sides. Otherwise I'd probably have to take it off and wring out the sweat during a ride. It's thin which doesn't change the fit of the helmet.
