Rain doesn’t deter riders

Today’s inclement weather didn’t stop the BMC Mountain to Beach riders appreciating the alpine scenery of Australia’s highest mountains. .

Day 2 for some was a case of finishing the 60km Berghaus Mountain Traverse whilst for others it was a unique opportunity to see some country they wouldn’t normally as the race, which started with a ride up the Ski Tube to Perisher Blue. Then it was across to Blue Cow Mountain and its views of Mount Kosciuszko and expansive views of the Main Range from Guthega Village. Riders also crossed the Snowy Plains before finishing their race on the shores of Lake Eucumbene.

Today’s race stage winner South Australian Brett Anderson (2:19:27) came in almost four minutes ahead of lead riders, Andrew Blair and Jason English and Denis Van Mill (all on 2:23:35).

This result doesn’t affect the overall classification, with Dennis Van Mill still trailing Andrew Blair by a mere six seconds.

The women’s category is tightening with Queenslander Naomi Hansen’s 4 minute win (2:55:48) over Canberra’s Rosemary Barnes (3:00:13) seeing her take the top spot by 56 seconds.

Today’s third place by Sydney’s Heather Evans (3:10:15) sees fellow Sydneysider Kath Bicknell (3:40:55) lose her third place overall.

The weather didn’t stop the riders enjoying themselves with the majority of riders agreeing the ride was challenging but enjoyable with many beaming faces covered in mud and exhausted yet happy riders.

With over 200 km’s left to ride, there’s plenty of opportunity for sightseeing or serious racing, with another day of high country scenery before the descent into the coastal zone, where riders head through rain forests and out onto sandy beaches.

Tomorrow means an early start for the riders, with the Ay Up Dawn Raid around the shores of Lake Eucumbene at Buckenderra Resort commencing at 5:15 am. With the weather forecast for snow about the peaks and occasional showers, it’s not something for the fainthearted.
