Sea you next year
The inaugural BMC Mountains to Beach mountain bike race finished in spectacular fashion on Narooma’s main beach today with riders crossing the line in the sand as the surf rolled in.
The riders have covered more than 375km since Monday 2 March but there were still a few sprints to the finish line, while many were happy just to finish.
None more so than Jason English. He needed to finish at least 3 minutes 27 seconds in front of rival Andrew Blair to claim the lead. Andrew finished third in today stage in 1:58:09. Jason had beaten him over the line by 3 minutes and 39 seconds – to win the Solo Men’s Open by just 20 seconds.
It was a very nervous 3 minutes and 39 seconds for Jason as he waited for Andrew to cross the line.
Second place today went to Dennis Van Mill in 1:58:01. Unfortunately not enough to beat Andrew Blair into second place overall.
Blair was disappointed to have lost the lead by so little, but philosophical about the defeat, as he and English are good friends off the race track.
The Women’s results may not have been as close, but this didn’t stop the competitive spirit showing through, with Naomi Hansen pushing herself all the way to finish in 2:29:69.
Hansen won the Open Women’s category by 58 minutes and 55 seconds. Heather Evans and Belinda Porter were the second and third place getters. Porter was more than 2 hours behind Hansen. Rosie Barnes, Hansen’s main rival early in the week was forced out on Day 3 with an injury.
Of the 172 competitors who entered the race, 153 completed the entire event, with only four riders withdrawing due to injury.
At the presentation dinner last night all agreed the event had been a spectacular success for its riding and its ever changing scenery.
The BMC Mountains To Beach can only grow from here.
