I had no idea flow was a scientific term first described in the 70's.
.
My boss who is now going into another role , always said to me if work is getting you down or life in general, go ride your bike even during work hours. He was someone who understood sometimes you need to switch off to reset yourself.
Currently I’m going through some health issues, which is holding me back from riding but when I do feel good enough to ride I feel so much better and that feeling lasts for days. But it can be a double edged sword as I sometimes I get lost in the moment and over do it then I’m screwed for the next week or two.

It's a nice article with a happy ending. Sadly I know another mountain biker with a brain tumour and it doesn't look like the same ending will happen for him.

I keep a shortcut to this one for when I inevitbly get asked what is a grown man doing spending so much time and money on mountain bikes.

The one you posted is better.

I’ve got a good riding mate who said to me words to the effect (when discussing mental health benefits of riding bikes) that he rides his road bikes when he wants to concentrate on a problem to solve, and he rides his mtb when he wants to switch off from the world. It instantly clicked with me as an approach I have unconsciously been taking for many years also.

I did hear on the radio this morning of a woman chucking a sickie yesterday then went hiking, ended up breaking her ankle and had to get rescued. Now has to explain her boss what really happened
Went for farewell drinks/lunch with the boss today and first thing he asked “you been riding?” and how things are going to get back out there, not just for the riding but for the mental wellness it provides.

Useless trivia, I have a semi useless degree in "leisure science" that I started in the 90s when I was looking for a career change. "Csiks-unpronounceable" was the go to reference when discussing the different philosophies of leisure and why people undertake it. Especially in relation to the outdoors and adventure /risk taking activities.

Should have called it in as a mental health day.

Not that I ride road anymore, but I've had exactly the same mindset for years.
