Broken wrist recovery

I had a stupid off when on a ride early this week and came out with a broken scaphoid (wrist). Has anyone else done this and how long before you were back on the bike again? Is there any chance i'll be racing the epic in 6 weeks? Not even a week and I'm going stir crazy from not riding, this is going to drive me nuts.

I'd say you'd be fine to race in six weeks, as long as you keep your wrist active once the initial pain settles down.

I broke my radius earlier in the year, but was told when I went to hspital that it was just a sprain (they didn't do an xray). As a result I was back riding (commuting) within a week and back to proper trail riding within three weeks. Wrapped my wrist up before all my rides and it was fine.

Wasn't until six weeks in that I finally saw my GP because there was still a bit of pain, and a subsequent xray showed the break, but by that point it had healed and the discomfort was due to tendontitis.

Someone in the Tour de France this year broke a scaphoid and kept going with it...

I was pretty sure I had broken my scaphoid in Whistler recently, but a second x-ray when I got back came up OK. I was told that as long as it was a clean (non-displaced) break it would only take 6-7 weeks to heal as long as it was immobilised immediately and kept in a cast. There may also be some rehabilitation time on top of that as you have to get strength back in that area.

I've broken the same wrist 3 times. Each time, they told me it should be in a cast/half cast for 4 weeks and then another 2 weeks with no contact sport (the breaks being from Rugby).

6 weeks should be fine mate, drink heaps of milk and start using it slowly but as soon as the pain subsides. It might be an idea to buy some sort of wrist brace? I got one from the chemist and it worked a treat when I started training again (after about 5 weeks).

6 weeks is the time to wait, but l still rode road with a plaster on. Nothing to extreme like big hills or stuff, l live in a very flat area. Or sit on a wind trainer to keep the legs spinning.

I say wait until you're absolutely sure, chances of having a big off if its not right would be pretty high.

Iv had 3 broken wrists on the left arm, given all fractures they take about 6 weeks to heal. Either full cast or half. I found full calf was better but they get filthy. Sometimes itchy but nothin a stick like object can't fix.
Just keep up the exercises usually pretty basic just like touching thumb to fingers and maybe stretching. As the dr/physio or who ever puts it on. I don't know if racing in 6weeks will go down great. Your arm feels quite weak after and does loose some muslce tone. But see how you go. I expect that the dr will say you can race but it's not reccomened.

need to be careful with a scaphoid fracture

if it doesn't heal properly you can have problems for years (i.e. osteonecrosis)

I fractured my scaphoid in April and it still plays up from time to time but I was back riding DH in six weeks with a wrist strap I bought from the chemist. Your bone will be healed within the six weeks but it's the damage to the surrounding tissue that gives you the pain. If you can deal with a bit of discomfort I'd race, your bone will be fine

true.

mine took 16 weeks. see a specialist about it - u can get an operation to shorten recovery if its early since the fracture. most difficult bone in the body to get better. dont take it lightly

I however am very normal. Trust me.

Quoted for truth, it is one of the most common fractures that does not heal well. Sometimes the blood supply that runs through the scaphoid is compromised, meaning the distal end of the bone heals very slowly or needs surgical intervention to mend.

I broke mine after falling off the roof, was 12 weeks before I could put any load through my hand and another 6 months before the symptoms subsided. Take it easy on this one and don't ride before it is well and truly ready, for such a small bone... I'd rather break a femur.

Most simple, yet most annoying injury you can do.

I fractured my scaphoid (right, through the waist, non-displaced) in April (easter weekend) and the cast came off nearly 9 weeks later (mid June). I then wore a cycling brace full-time because one doctor told me I should of been in a cast for another month, and another told me I should start moving it. My solution? A happy medium.

No direct scaphoid support (ie, thumb), but my pain was all in the flex of the wrist - which is how I broke it, landing on it.

Day to day tasks are OK now, so is riding. But pushups are still really painful, and some twisting motions cause me discomfort like opening a jar of pasta sauce etc.

I rested mine like a champ, and I don't think I will have any long term issues. Read the above post. You need to do the same. Just accept the fact that you won't be riding for a while, and man up and keep it in the cast as long as possible, and be patient with it. Because it has limited bloodflow, and more or less dictates the blood flow into the thumb, you really don't want problems with it later on. There is the potential for half the bone to literally die if you dont rest it. Just spend 30 mins reading off a google search to see the gravity of it.

It was the first bone I ever broke, and from what I read, one of the worst. Cleanly breaking your arm in three places is not as high risk long term as a hairline fracture of the little scaphoid (***not a medical practitioner)

This. I fractured my right scaphoid, non-displaced, in May and although the break itself healed quickly (confirmed by MRI), I still have wrist/forearm pain when I put any backwards load on it, eg. doing a pushup.

I'm in a race against time to heal, supposed to be heading to Whistler in 3 weeks

Thanks for the replys. Mosty confirmed what I already feared through after google searches. Looks like I could be off the bike for a while. Back to the specialist tomorrow so will find out more then but the emergency room doctor said they are bad breaks and can really vary a lot in healing time eg. 4 - 12 weeks. Better to get things right and not rush it I think. Might be spending a lot more time on here and not in the bush for the next few months hey!

Pretty much what some of the other guys said, it can be a tricky bone to heal because of the blood vessel in it.

It took me seven months for mine to heal and be able to ride after they put a screw in it after having 2 casts, but once the screw was in it was a quick process.

Just don't continually aggravate it or fiddle with it in a way that will cause pain or discomfort.

Mate, who are you going to trust/believe? A bunch of non qualified forum posters or a specialist surgeon with qualifications and lots of experience with such injuries?
EVERY scaphoid injury is different. You cannot compare your injury with anyone on this forum. If the specialist says 12 weeks, then LISTEN to the specialist. If the specialist says 6 months, then listen to the specialist!

Lecture over. Now go buy a wind trainer and lots of MTB videos.

I'd listen to both, myself. Doctors are covering their arses to a degree.
I would do what the doctor says though.
I have one scafoid screwed and fused to one of my forearm bones, can't recall the names. Probably from not taking it serious enough(I did have the other arm broken aswell)when it was first healing There was lots of other damage in that wrist but.
When I broke the other scafoid, I cut the back out of the cast as it was too tight for my QLD holiday, I'd tape it back on when not just sitting. I put a Cumfrey poultace on it and it was healed(didn't how up in X Ray)2 or 3 weeks later. Cunfrey, I can't say enough about the shit. Wonder herb.
Someone in the Tour de France this year broke a scaphoid and kept going with it...
I think he only rode for the next day, there's money, glory and pride involved there. Has nothing to do with what's best for recovery.

Of course I'm plannng on doing exactly what the specialist tells me. I just wanted to know what other peoples experiences were with similar injuries. I will spend as much time off as I need to to get things right but it's good to have an idea of what to expect.

i spent 12 weeks in a fiberglass cast, have been in a aircast since start of june waiting on a bone graph op which wont be till next march if im lucky. at least im back on the bike and will get to ride the dh season spewing on not allowed to go snowboarding though

Not great news. Saw the specialist and aske if I would be able to race in 6 weeks and he basically laughed at me and said no chance. Apparently I will be lucky to be out of a cast by then.
I think I will be taking this advice for now then.

Now go buy a wind trainer and lots of MTB videos.
On the plus side at least the weather should be awesome for riding by the time I'm back on the bike!
