Budget XC lights

I've used my Princeton Tec EOS a few times as a bike light. It has been upgraded to a Seoul LED and throws a decent amount of light. I think it's quite usable when head mounted. Having said that, I'm currently looking into the cutter kit that will give me 4 R2 XR-E's. Now that will be a light setup :)

Deal Extreme lights v. Bike Planet 1/2W Blaze?

How would these ~$20 Deal Extreme Cree lights compare with my ~$50 Planet Bike 1/2W Blaze?

Are they in the same ballpark for output and beam spread?

Being new to this I don't have any sense of how Ay-Ups or Deal Extreme cheapies would compare to what I have already experienced.

Hi Axertes,
I bought a niterider sol and solmate, all up they cost me 360 dollars, the solmate is the helmet light with extension cord and the sol is the bar light, they both put out 120 lumens each. The helmet light has a great strap set up and they are both very light.
They are both led.
They both run for 4hours.
They take 8 hours to charge(a little long)
As moggio and JP can attest to, they put out a great amount of light for not that much money and bugger all weight.
I highly recommend them!
They also allow me to hit big downhill sections at night at top speed with throwing plenty of light ahead!

This is an example of a good gravedig :D

Thanks dude, although I think lights are temporarily off the agenda for broke ol' me. I'll definitely dig it up again myself when the time comes to pursue that project again.

Bit of an epic dredge for my first ever post here.
Sorry about that.

I was surprised that I couldn't find a thread on lights or night riding, I hope I'm not failing at using the search.

I've gone back to full time study so I'm on a very tight budget but missing my evening rides.

As a budget light option, does anyone have any experience of the Kathmandu lights?

I'm not fast and it would just be for the Yarras I would have thought.

I have an option to get a second hand pair for $60 at 450 lumens.

I appreciate your expert knowledge!

It's a generic design with low power and Crapmandu usual exorhbitant markup.

If it's your only light, you need more power.

Best is to have one on handlebars and one on helmet (to at least provide redundancy).

Something like this (and no, it wont really be 5000ln):

Solarstorm off Ebay. I have 2 sets. Very bright. Worked fine all last winter riding in really wet weather. Batterys are pretty stuffed now but they have had a lot of use. I'm buying new ones now. You can get a battery for $15 or a new light and battery combo on auction for $20 ish. I'm happy to but 2 new batts/lights each year at those prices. Nothing wrong with the lights, they have upset a few people with expensive lights cause they are brighter. Batterys are just crap. Might look at getting some decent ones

Thanks for that.

The ebay link didn't work but I get the gist.

I'm looking at a second hand pair of Shatmandu lights as above, but the V1 which are 450lm each. I'm keen to have one on the bars and helmet as you say, so this seems a good direction for cheapo lights.

SolarStorm 6000LM 3x CREE XM-L U2 LED Headlamp HeadLight Bicycle Bike Head Light

Try this search. I pad $35.00 a couple of weeks ago and they work well. Took about 10 days to arrive from downtown China somewhere.

Well worth the money. I hate head mounts (mostly because I'm too bloody tall). My last two lights were stolen, these are great.

Enjoy.

+1 for the Solar storms.. Red ones are brighter (no shit!). Best bet is also grab yourself a bigger battery so you can use the original as a back up and get some more run time: these packs are sweet & will happily charge with your Solarstorm charger - all should be 8.4v

Battery & Light links, hope they both work:
