Yes I know how it works, and that it's irrelevant. Yep cooling down too much is a reason that could explain it.
Two years in a row the elite that took about the longest allowed time in the untimed section won though - there's something in that I think :)

Yes, I agree. Strategically it is very difficult to 'race' when you have no idea exactly who the leader is, or indeed, if you are the leader! Much easier mentally to chase after a leader you can see ahead, sit on, or (as a leader) try to lose those behind. Basically this type of race ends up being similar to an individual time trial.

I think MTB time trials would be unreal! Bring em on!
