Clutch Replacement.

Hey 'Burners,

The clutch in my venerable Subaru Outback is really close to shitting itself, so I need it replaced pretty damn quick. Any ideas roughly how much it should cost to get done?

1-2k most likely. Budget on having it out of service for at least a week, and take it to a clutch specialist.

I don't know where Knuckles is taking his car to but I got mine done in a day although it was a hilux. Just call up in advance to make sure they have all the parts in stock.

yup, a clutch is day surgery at best. it's only a few hours as they dont have a ridiculous east-west engine and box.

Booked in for surgery on Thursday. Apparently it could be either of two types, and they won't know until they pull it out what it is. :noidea: At worst (so I'm told) $1500 & an overnight stay.

That's it! I'm going back to the knob who did my Golf, and kicking him in the nuts.
east-west engine/box can be an utter see you next tuesday. a previous car i owned had a service manual that said it was a 14 hour operation to change the clutch. took me a whole weekend, and a few stitches in my thumb.

sounds about right... it's not uncommon for manufacturers to change clutch/gearbox types through the years. any reputable place would have either in stock locally.

1k - 1500 including labour, like has been said day surgery at best. Subaru gearboxes are easy enough to work on just a pita to fill up with gearbox oil

That'd be the VW Quotient rather than the fault of the mechanic. It took my local dealer a week (normally a day job) to do the timing belt on my VW van after my mechanic took one look at the details and (allowing for the VW Quotient) said 'not for me'.
