This was meant to be a cheap build from spare bits that I had lying around the garage, for something that I could ride to work.
It started with the frame. A home made steel job that was last built up about 15 years ago. In its previous life it got a run in the Canberra nationals at Stromlo for DH and 4X. I wish I still had the 150mm buttery Marzocchi 66 from back in the day that it ran!
I had to buy 2 main bits for it. The rear just missed out on fitting a 27.5 wheel, so it was new rim and hub time. The Hope is interchangeable with the dually, so this was another benefit of getting a 26in built up. Just a change of end caps and I'll be giving the dually a test as a 27.5 / 26 mullet down the track.
Next was the fork, took a gamble on an Ali rigid carbon fork. It was non boost (and more importantly straight steerer for the frame) and I already had a wheel spare. When I fitted the wheel to start with it had a 2.3mm thick TRP rotor which hit the PM brake mount posts and the wheel wouldn't spin at all. I managed to find a 1.8mm Shimano rotor lying around and that seems to have done the trick. It still pings on the PM mounts under load, but nothing major, it'll stop that eventually I'm sure when enough material wears off.
Other bits that I had lying around were a brand new, I think Ali, 11 speed derailleur and shifter from who knows when and an old 11 speed Shimano cassette with the top 3 cogs cooked, so they stayed off. 6 gears are enough and I left the smallest off too so I could tweak the chain line. Seems to shift ok with an old KMC chain as well. I just had to grab a new chainring. A new steel NW job fit the bill for about $25.
I couldn't sell the Uberbike ceramic BB so on that went with some possibly Ali cranks that look like a Shimano rip off that were in a box squirreled away for some reason. Time will tell how they go...
