plug in route from Sydney to Omeo via Hume Highway. Go via Tumba which is where I was originally going to stop overnight. But check map, I can go down this road here, Google tells me a couple of hours down this C545 road. No worries, I'll push on get there around 5 ish, big day driving but get there early.

Get into Vic, swim in the Murray, (see my Omeo post) keep following my google master, see these signs, Unsleaed Road, no dramas I'm in a 4wd the unsealed bit can't be that long surely, Google wouldn't do that to me surely.

Hit the unsealed bit, this is cool, what the car is made for........I wonder how long it goes for, better slow down it's dusty and slidely AF, massive cliffs on the side, certain death......almost 2 hours later I finally get to the end of this farken road, shitting myself when the few other mainly 4wd come the opposite direction that I don't drive off the cliff or get my windshield smashed 🤣

But I can honestly say the views were UNREAL! Stunning country but never trust the fucking satnav again especially with times to destination.

Totally my fault but I must admit on this one occasion, I'm ultimately happy I was a fuckwit!

Yeah, you have to be careful blindly following Satnav.

I think they fixed it but there was a bug with Google maps in Tassie. So when people wanted to go to Cradle Mountain, instead of sending them Via Cradle Mountain Road, which takes you to the Cradle Mountain Lodge, the Parks Visitors Centre. It would send you up this ever dwindling road that turns into and old track that turns into the hiking track that goes up the actual Cradle Mountain! 😂

Bet a lot of "4wd" (actually SUV) rentals have to get salvaged from places like that

I dunno, that sounds like a typical Victorian 'C' grade backroad at the moment!

I think there are many roads in Tassie that turn into real shocker of surprises. The road into the Westerns lakes is but one of them. When I see 4WD road i think rock crawler 4WD.

Yep, as someone who frequently goes way out for work reasons, Google Maps will always take you on the shortest route. The consideration of it being the most appropriate route is always optional.

It's only got me in the shit once. Took me to a dry weather road that was an hour away from a sealed road, about four hours after a massive rain dump. No time to turn around, so I sent it (I know, I know) but I wasn't the one in the deepest shit. Halfway along I came across an abandoned jack-knifed Flat Bed with trailer, carrying two caravans. I made it out, and figured they'd pin them for the road repair after they dragged it out.

Google did that to us out near Boort. It sent us up a country lane with an official sounding name after a week of heavy rain. My wife was not happy with my efforts to maintain momentum down the road while the bottom of the car was getting pelted in mud. She keep saying "Michael...".
My daughter pipes up after a few kay and says are we going to be ok ? My wife responds with yes darling, everything's fine.
My daughter fired straight back - I don't think it is...

Ah, the joys of mapping softwares! A few years ago we were doing a half lap, and maps sent us down a route that would, apparently, save a solid hour on our journey by cutting of many many kilometers...

It's rare that I get worried. Especially in our touring rig, which is set up to take the worst and keep smiling. This time we were fully stocked up with water & food too.

But about halfway through this alleged shortcut, the heavens opened up. HARD. And the road turned to absolute shite. The only thing that saved us was the fact that the fenceline was well back from the road, so we putted along the grass field until we were clear of the mud & clay just just wants to eat you.

That hour saving turned into a 2 hour addition.

We laugh about it now, but none of us were laughing then, except our 4 year old at every splash!

Lol, reminds me of the time I chose to go an alternative way. Dirt road, no biggie, common occurrence, but the huge downpour was definitely not anticipated. Couldn't see past the bull bar. Didn't want to stop because I wasn't certain I'd get rolling again, just had to have faith in the road being pretty well maintained up until that point.

Someone driving down it with GPS turned on is enough for Google to decide it's a road. Sometimes picks up driveways, sometimes 4WD tracks.
