COVID-19: who’s going full doomsday prep on this?

In this employment market? DP World will have scabs lined up around the block for the chance to enter the Thunderdome and fight to the death for a chance to do the job for half the pay. And then the government will send out the army to protect the work zone from the picketing wharfies.
It's finding scabs who have the requisite experience and tickets for operating the specialised cranes and loaders used in the docks. Not to mention them also having a valid MSIC (Maritime Security) card.

That said, the MUA have vastly misjudged this. There are essential medical supplies in those containers (and hot pants!) and people aren't going to look kindly on them getting their knickers in a twist when we have thousands of people working round the clock in supermarkets and home-delivery, putting themselves at far greater risk to ensure we are all fed and looked after.

Not to mention that stevedores have bugger all hands-on interaction with the goods these days - except for when they're flogging shit from the containers.

Not where I work, we are probably the most germaphobic group I have seen. I put gloves on just to empty the bin.
There is plenty of places I'd glove up too. I certainly wouldn't be doing heart surgery bare fisted. I'm surprised you aren't in a sperm suit. People though...are people. I saw a lady wearing gloves at the supermarket the other day. Then she was touching her bag, wallet, phone, groceries...all with the gloves. Hmmmm...on cases like that, wash your hands.

Patrick's were able to be fully operational overnight here...that was over 20 years ago though.

In these time of need I'm sure they could find people who would fudge the rules swiftly in the name of unloading. Though that might bump this issue out past the 14 days of quarantine.

They didn't offer it and I don't think they fit the requirements. Bummer but thats the way it is.
That's shit dude. Most businesses would be eligible, unless it is a very large corporation, subject to a 30% reduction in turnover. The issue may be that you are not eligible as you had moved there less than 12 months ago if I recall.

Is your wife/partner still employed?

Hmm positive news. Talking to a friend who runs a massive steel company in China. Things are on the improve. 6 months and they'll be back to full swing is their vibe.

Just got an email from a shop (a few locals on this forum too, apologies if you are connected in any way)

I have spent a bit of cash here over the years, swags, 4WD gear, Sleeping bags, chairs and other stuff, maybe $3k-$4k spent at this company in the past.

Didn't know what to think when I got it, Profiteering or reinvention ???

Is their "face to be saved" in laying down and not taking advantage of this situation ?

Can reinvention be looked at as profiteering in the current climate if the prices are inflated.

Charging $30 for a $5-7 bottle of hand sanitiser that is still 3-4 weeks away.

I thought they went broke three or four years ago!

Sydney Tools will sell sanitiser to you for much less if you bring the bottle. Or you can get it by the 15 litre drum

They did, I believe he expanded his business too quickly, got in strife and went under.

Got back going again a couple of years later with only the gear that was their big sellers.

Anyway, sent him an email (before I posted here this morning) got one back saying the hand Sanitiser was so expensive, they were just about breaking even, they were actually doing Australia a service and I didnt know what I was talking about.

So I pointed out to him that they were selling 5 x boxes for $5742 (360 bottles) which equates to $15.95 a bottle and still making a profit,. so would say at minimum, have put at least a 200% mark up on single bottles.

He came back with -
armchair critics really need to stick their noses into it ?
What are you doing to help beside throwing mud from the sidelines ?
Might want to actually read our product listings and check your maths mate?
and a few other lines that spell out that I was not the only one having a go at his attempt to save the nation.

Lots of question marks in his rant, I think he wants me to reply... maybe I'll leave it as he seems a bit upset

I think in the last 2 months they actually had the biggest turnover they have ever had and there were 2 more big jobs lined up so they took out a second lease on another warehouse. Less than a week later government starts locking down and the jobs dont materilise. Bad timing all around.
Wife is self employed and just had a big last month in commercial interior design. All her projects have stopped now though too...

Story time: I went on my first outing in a while the other day to the bike shop. They made us wait outside until ushered in, we had to wash hands with soap and water, dry off with paper towel. I was very good at looking and being mindful not to touch anything. Then I saw an ebike and wondered what the clicky button felt like so I pressed it with my finger and then immediately touched my face. I am not going to last long at this rate.
Eewwwww - ebike germs!

Better to leave him alone. He was a self serving dill back then and I can't imagine time has changed him. Failing in Mildura hurt his pride badly...

Yep, that's about how long since they've had a 'dealer' here.

My hours have been reduced, but my work has told me I'm part of the core group of multi-skilled employees, so it shouldn't get much worse. They've also applied for the JobKeeper supplement. Hopefully that comes through.

They opened all their cinema’s then shut them all down again the next day.. As one china expert I read say, watch what China does not what it says..
For example why did they need to build an entire new hospital in one week if they only had 3000 fatalities and 80000 cases? They are bullshitters of the highest order..

Does anyone know exactly what the rules in Victoria are regarding leaving the house for a ride?

I'm keen to go for a pedal alone, but its a 30 min drive. It seems pretty clear that exercising alone is allowed. But exercising that involves having to drive there?
