DMR Switchback

I need an all-round bike that I'll be able to ride all day on, that I can race cars to work on, that's nimble enough for singletrack, and strong enough for big hits, and that's dirt cheap. Ok, I sound like a nightmare customer right now, so forget the last one ;)

But yeh, I'm getting sick of riding a 14" frame mtb or a 24" wheeled freakmachine, so it's time to upgrade... I've seen the new DMR Switchback, and read a few good reviews of it. I like the sounds of it, a trail bike that's designed for long travel forks, and has jump/slalom heritage.

Here's some info:

Anyone know much about them, got any experiences or comments? Unfortunately the DMR site doesnt have much info about specs, so I'm sorta flying blind on this so far. But yeh, if you have an idea about how it rides, tell me! I've had a quick look around at similar bikes in this price range, but couldn't find much. I'll keep doing research over the weekend and see what I can come up with.

there was a very complimentary reveiw in a pommy mag called 'whatmountainbike?' It was going to be one of my steel hardtail options before i chose the .243.

Looks nice and orange.

I don't know any more than you about the switchback, but having had a steel HT with 5 inch forks as an all-round bike I say the set up would be sweet. You can do a bit of everything on it.

I reckon it will be very similar to your surly.
Yeh sorta, the Surly is my brothers, it's an 18" so too big for me :(

And yeh stinky|dan, I saw on the dirtworks.com.au site that they had the frames in, 2 days later I read the review in whatmtb?, and apparently a few other mags have given it the thumbs up too. Seems very interesting.

Rik, how atall are you if the 18" is to big? I had got in touch with the Surly guys and they said it would be a good trail rider for dudes around 6 foot tall.

I'm 173cm or so, and really pedantic about how a bike fits me. I could ride the Surly if I wanted to, but I wouldn't be 100% comfortable or confident in it.

The Surly would be a fair bit heavier than the DMR as well.

Have a look around for a 2nd hand GT Tequesta frame in 16 inch, the last models were 2000 year I think. They were made from Reynolds 525 steel and I picked up my frame and bits for $200 in near perfect condition.

It does not have a disc mount on the rear though.

A really sweet handling and strong little frame.

Earlier models were straight 4130 steel with a butted seat post, so a little bit heavier, but still lighter than a DMR.
