I was heavily into Foresters for a while and had a mate doing repairable write off's and half cut conversions into Foresters (taught me more than 3 years as a Mechanic Apprentice with Mazda).
So from the memory banks
-Australia never got the genuine STI Foresters, so they were an import, a few came from NZ, a couple in Canberra came from Japan as their owners had garages to store them in over there for the period so they were exempt from import taxes and thus just a personal vehicle relocation, and there was one that was silver and relocated under DFAT from Fiji to Canberra.
They came with a few extra goodies like the STI seats from the WRX, Brembo brakes, a tuned engine with a few extra goodies, some had the forged pistons and a better turbo the TD04 etc. from factory (the forester one is very lacking and runs out of puff very quickly).
But it was mostly the little bits that added up:
-STI build plate
-Interior with blue accents and STI trim, gearknob, proper metal STI pedals and footrest, STI floor mats, bucket seats, slimline roof rails, bigger wheels including spare that clears brembos, Brembos, red engine cover, STI injectors, STI grille and body kit, STI specific paint code (WR blue etc), STI exhaust system, STI springs and struts, STI strut braces, STI diffs and 6 speed gearbox.
And of course the STI ECU which was mapped more aggressively than a standard Forester.

This also meant that they were 100% legal.
As with the standard Forester, many of the parts that came on the STI needed to be engineered (as per insurance compliance)/fabbed up correctly, IE no cable ties holding brake lines on coil overs, to fit on a standard forester, engineering for Brembos with the adapters in NSW ACT is around the $1500+ as it involves a brake test at the local track.

A friend of mine sold his for more than he paid in Japan after owning it for a few years, and ended up buying an EVO wagon (rarer than STI Foresters) for the same money at the time around $60k a few years ago.

There was also the next generation Forester, called the STI pack forester, sold in showrooms Australia wide, this missed out on the engine mods but had the 'look fast bits', but sadly wasn't the JDM STI forester.
Evos don't do much for me.... except for the Evo IX wagons. Such sleepers.
