M988 brakes, M980 low-clamp FD for 3x, and rear 135q/r hub.

Due to different chainring ratios & resulting difference in cage size, 9-sp. generation doesn't play nice with 10-sp.

Although assembly hasn't progressed since the last update, bits have been coming together behind the scenes.

The Spec so far:

Frame: 2012 Giant Anthem X Advanced SL, 18.5" (M)
Fork: OEM Giant blue Fox 32 F120 RLC; rebound, adjustable force non-remote lockout, low-speed compression adjustment, 120mm travel; supplied but not fitted 20mm travel spacer so I can drop back to original-spec 100mm if desired.
Shock: Fox Float RP23
Crank: Shimano M980 XTR 3x (XT middle ring), with BB93 XTR threaded bottom bracket.
RD: M985 XTR clutchy long cage for 3x10.
FD: M980 XTR low-clamp 3x10.
Shifters (yes, both of them! ): M980 XTR 3x10 bar clamp.
Pedals: M990 XTR Race, SPD 25th anniversary special edition, in blue ano finish.
Wheels: M785 XT "Race" 559 x 21mm rim, 100x15mm hub Front, M788 XT "Trail" 559x24mm,135x10mm rear.
Chain & cassette: Shimano HG 95 XT chain and M771 XT 11-36 10-sp. cassette. Have a M980 XTR cassette, but that will wait in reserve until I get the ultimate wheels.
Other: OEM Giant blue ano derailleur hanger & stem top cap; Hope Tech blue ano seatpost clamp. M9110 XTR 15x100 front hub for future build into a carbon rim...

BB sorted, will be current XTR- spec BB93 threaded. Headset is standard Giant/FSA OD1 tapered semi-integrated. Cockpit (bar, stem, post) to be sorted; will be carbon, whatever I can find a matching set of, based around the key consideration of a flat handlebar that is not a mile wide..... Grips will be blue to fit the colour trim theme, but beyond that dunno yet. For saddle I'll likely nick the Fizik Gobi off the #2 bike, then look for something to keep that ready for backup duty. Tyres most likely Maxxis Crossmark II, they work for how I ride. Major missing piece of the puzzle is M980-series (preferably 988 "Trail") brakes; proving very hard to find.

Hung the drivetrain bits on it, and swapped cassette, brake rotor & tyre over to the M788 XT rear wheel donated by @Plankosaurus and fitted that in place of the 775 I had, so graphically the wheels now match. Chucked a tyre & rotor on the front, only for display purpose as they're a bit NQR.... Progress pics will follow soon.

Found on Fleabay a M9000 Q/R rear hub, mechanically identical but cosmetically different to the M985, but fits the colour theme of the 980 series. Slightly unfortunately it has the silly auction process & no "buy now" option, but so far I'm the only bidder, with three days to run....

Cockpit (bar/stem/seatpost) are currently shaping up to be Ritchey Super Logic carbon, just need to scrounge €500-odd..... Found a Fizik Gobi with 7x9mm carbon rails, which I'm pretty sure will fit with the earmarked Ritchey post, but I don't want to commit to it in case I end up with a different post that won't take the oval rails....

Had eyes on a M988 Trail brake set, but that ran away before I could muster the funds, so still on a blank on that front....

If it was my only bike I would chuck almost anything on to get it going, but I've got the #2 to keep me going, so I can take the time to get this one right first time.

For a little diversion, here's #2, The Understudy. It's essentially the same thing as ex-#1 and Project Phoenix, just lower-spec. It"s a "grandpa's axe" kind of mixed bag of parts, directly tracing its descent from my first MTB, a 2008-model Anthem, whilst not carrying any original parts over to the current form..... Although relegated to reserve bike status in more recent years, it was originally my only MTB, and I held onto it because when I was doing long races it was handy to have a backup bike with the same setup.

Fork: Rock Shox Reba dual air, Pop-Loc remote lockout, tapered steerer.
Shock: Fox Float RP2
Wheels: Shimano M785 XT "Race" 559x21mm rims, 9x100 Q/R front, 10x135 Q/R rear, Maxxis Ardent 26x2.25" tyres, toobless.
Crank: Shimano M660-10 SLX 3x, BB71 press-fit Bottom bracket.
R. Derailleur: M663 SLX long-cage, 3x10-sp.
F. Derailleur: M780 XT low-clamp, 3x10
Shifters: M770-10 XT 3x10-sp.
Chain: M981 XTR
Cassette: M771 XT 10-sp, 11-36
Pedals: M980 XTR
Brakes: M775 XT, RT81 IceTech 160mm rotors
Other: Giant in-house aluminium seatpost, Fizik Gobi saddle (Ti rails), no-name aluminium 28.6x31.8x80mm stem, Ritchey WCS Carbon flat handlebar, 710mm x 5° sweep (need a bit more, #1 will get 9°), Jet Black red lock-on grips.
