Electric Vehicles etc

That's a good looking car
Thanks. We took a gamble on the matte colour as we had never seen this colour in person before. Decision was made with google photos lol, the Hyundai website was completely off.

Even the dealer was surprised at how good the colour was, it was the first one for them too. But because matte paint is a pain with scratches, it goes off for full PPF (and tints) on Monday.

Did you get the back windows blanked off or is that factory?

It's factory.

Every place was telling me they can't match it for the front, well legally anyway. I'll leave that up to the missus what she wants to do for that, as it's her car. I just pay the bills!

So no option for a tint delete then, thats pretty shit. But why would that not be legal...?

That’s privacy glass rear. Have it on our Kia. It’s great and looks darker in low light but can’t get tints to match due to state rules. Super weird.

Its just the privacy glass, there is no actual tint on the glass itself. I can't remember if the sun shades were up on the windows in that pic, it would make it look a lot darker than it really is.

The places I called said that there is no restriction on the rear windows for darkness, just the fronts. Because of that it's hard to match the tints as the rears are generally darker than allowed on the front. One guy did say that the Hyundai privacy glass is pretty dark, and if the front was matched it would reduce visibility at night. I've had cars in the past where the windows were as dark as the tinter would go, and he has a point.

So you’d have to actually replace the glass to get rid of it… That’s crap. Still not sure they that would be illegal though?

Oh I didn’t read the last bit a you’re saying it’s illegal to go that dark on the front.

Good… Should be illegal on the back windows too. Very dumb fashion trend, windows are for seeing out of!

When I went to get the Alfa it turned out it had had a dealer tint put on it. Had to fork out money to get it removed but at least it could be removed!

Test drove a Geely EX5 today. Seriously impressive. Loads of kit and power did not seem to overwhelm the FWD layout. Although I’m sure if you were aggressive you could get those wheels spinning.

Ride and comfort very good and the voice control was very effective. Indicator on the left and gear selector on the right. Nice to have this the other way around but have a Euro currently so not a deal breaker. Colour choices are a bit so so. Wife likes the massage seats. 🤣 Kids had heaps of space in the rear too.

CarPlay promised as an update in July and I forgot to ask about tow bars. Will test drive BYD next but the Geely is serious value for money.

lovely looking car, interested to hear the ride report
I haven't driven it much as I'm currently doing a spot of FIFO, however the PPF and tints were finished last week. Wifey has been driving it all week and is happy with it. However, I drove it this morning and initial impressions are:
  • The ride is firmer than the non N-Line version, but not uncomfortable.
  • It's deceptively large. Looks like a hatch but its got the same 3m wheelbase as our previous CX-9 which was a tank. Interior space is great.
  • NVH is good, I expected more tyre noise on 20's but it's certainly not intrusive. It's got Michelin Pilot Sports on it.
  • The standard drive mode is sedate, poke it in the guts and it certainly wakes up and gets moving.
  • The regen braking is good, not as violent as the BMW iX2 we drove, but a nice balance of slowing down without being harsh (unlike the Polestar 2 I was in last night on the way back from the airport, fark that was a bit rough).
  • It sits and corners very flat, steering is direct and I think you could have a bit of fun on twisty roads with it.
  • The seats are good, the alcantara grips you and you don't slide around. Don't know how long its going to last though.
  • The Bose stereo is ok, not mind blowing but acceptable.
  • Bluelink is ok, it's nice to be able to pre-condition and check on the car the car remotely. I believe the earlier models didn't have this.
  • All the safety warnings are annoying, you can mute some of them though.
  • Still need to find time to browse the user manual, which is several hundred pages! Also, I haven't set up my profile in the car, play with the settings, wireless carplay etc etc.
  • I removed the ugly factory number plate bracket this morning and put on a slimline one.

Let us know if they've fixed (or provided the option to switch off without entering a menu) the audible "over"speed warnings. I love the look of the Ioniq 6 but would kill it with fire if it beeped every time I drifted 1km/h over the speed limit!

On ours you long press the mute volume button on the steering wheel and it turns the overspeed warnings off. Until next time you get into the car (and probably when disengaging cruise control or some other silly thing). It will still make a noise when the speed limit changes though.

Roof racks on and test driven.
Fair amount of wind noise > but it was only wind noise, no whistle or anything.
Short round trip to an MTB park - 17 kms away. Used 8% battery which is fine, it was very very windy today.
Sometime I'll road trip to Brisbane and report the battery for a longer drive

More colour choices than the Chinese brands. Cheap though so either in response to new competitors or just not selling.
One of their selling points is "functional interior"...

If anyone can make an electric car unreliable, it will be Jeep... :p
