Evil Wreckoning Review

Hey, burners.
This has been a long time coming as I keep injuring myself :/
So I've now put some decent time on the Wreckoning to give a quick review.

To say the bike is ridiculously good.
I was expecting it to be a steam train everywhere, which it is. But it is surprisingly nimble.

Climbing:
For a 160mm 29er, it climbs really well. Better than my last bike ( remedy 26')
The seat angle isn't great, I run my saddle tilted forward (think Concord) to counter it.
But the bike definitely isn't a "fast" climber.
Also due to the BB height, you need to be wary of clipping pedals on things, even in its higher setting.

Descending:
Holy ****.
This bike is faster than my downhill bike was. Even at slow speeds, it just eats up everything.
Once speed starts to pick up it gives a massive margin of error. I've hit loose rocks in flat turns( enough to make me think I'm going OTB), and the bike just eats it.
But it really comes into its own on steep, fast and rough trails. Anything else feels mellow.
I'm yet to see a need to use the X-LOW setting, as its too low to use in Canberra.
( as a note, when the bike is at speed it has enough pop, that it launches itself with very little effort).
It is very hard to explain how this bike feels on the smoother tracks. It keeps accelerating with very little effort. But makes the straighter tracks boring.

Spec:
To say, Its heavy for a carbon frame. Mine weighs in at roughly 13kgs for a size large built with ARC 35s and DVO forks. But on the trail, it doesn't feel heavy. ( and the internal dropper routing gets stuck on install)
The chain clearance does suck, even on a 36 ring. ( I suggest going a 36 with a big cassette on the rear to avoid the 10-12t sprockets)
The RS monarch that comes on the bike, makes the bike lower than I think it should be, it really sits in its travel. Which makes technical climbing a challenge. ( I'll have a PUSH 11.6 coming soon). It does an alright job in the rougher stuff but does start to feel overwhelmed after a while. It also leaks air until its broken in. The evil also requires a higher than normal pressures which doesn't help the seals.
The DVO diamonds are a stellar fork. I've injured my right hand badly, to the point that my hand fatigues and gives way after about 3-5 mins of descending. The OTT negative spring adjustment makes a huge difference with this. The other adjustments are noticeable as well. The DVO tuning guides are also a good baseline.C
The ARC 35 rims are monsters and I don't notice them. (no issues whatsoever)
The i9 hubs. They're loud, but serve there purpose as a bell. :) Oh, and they are fast engaging too.
The Minion DHR 2 and SS. I found they are great all-around tires but the SS does look (and feel) a little square at lower pressures
The guide RSCS brakes are great.... in the cold. Will be getting replaced for TRPS soon.( or similar)
Wolf tooth dropper lever: No issues, always works and its easy to use while riding.
Chromag cockpit: Its chromag, Nuff said.

Would I recommend it? ---- YES!. But its more a fun bike rather than a race bike.

I'll add some parts once I've got my 11.6 and some brakes that work properly :)

Thanks for the write up. Long travel 29ers seem to have come a long way in the last few years. I rode a friends Norco Range 29er after hopping straight off my 130 travel 29er and despite it being a size too big for me, I was blown away by how nimble it was and how well it climbed.

Your list of coming upgrades sounds on point too.

Thanks for the write up mate. I'm STILL waiting on the $1500 worth of components that Auspost "lost" and chain reaction replaced to turn up so that I can build my wrecker up. It's killing me so at least I can live vicariously!!!! I've got my push Revalved from the Mach 6 to suit this thing and installed it the other day. I've also made the call to get the PUSH ACS3 coil upgrade for the Fox 36's. I've had the frame 3 weeks now and many of the small bits and pieces but Auspost bless them lost: -

Cranks, BB, chainring, cassette, derailleur, chain, brakes front and back, shifter (All XT), KS Lev dropper and WTB Rocket saddle, Chromag Carbon Bar (now out of stock so I had to order a RaceFace in grey instead of the orange I wanted) and Chromag Stem.

Thankfully after a lot of pissing around Chain reaction resent it all but it's been a month since it was originally due and I am not coping well!!!!! Christmas in Canberra sucked when I couldn't give this the test I had planned. When it's built up I'll chip my thoughts in too.

We'll have to catch up for a belt down Stromlo sometime mate!!!!

Porn!!!!!!

Cheers Scott.

Looks sweet mate!
Yea my parts from CRC took 3 weeks to arrive( which was fine as the frame took 3 months)
Just a heads up when u run the seat post line, it snags on the inner tube. and get yourself a Jagwire cable splitter, otherwise the cables will rub on that beautiful push shock.

Yea bud, gimme a heads up once CRC and auspost pull there heads out of there a***s. I'll join you on my 1 working brake :)

Yeah mate already got one of those, saw all the posts on MTBR. Like you I can't see running it in Xlow all the time but will give it a test. Might be a good setting for a day at Thredbo or Greenvalleys for example.

I can see XLOW being usable with a PUSH if it sits higher in its travel.
but with the monarch, the bike sits way too low.

So my stuff finally turned up and the building has begun. Was super excited right up until I found that CRC had accidentally sent two left brake kits!!!!!!

Today I managed to get the brake cables sized and bled (picked up a right lever set locally and will return the left one), got the drive train on and the rear mech dialled. Also managed to do the ACS3 Coil conversion to the forks and then got them installed on the bike. Stem and bars are on. Tomorrow I'll pick up a 180-203mm brake adapter then I should be right to get the front end finished off. Then it's the saddle on and running the internal dropper cable and she should be good to go for a test ride.

Looking good in bits there! :D

Is that Uberbike brake hose you have there? I've used their rotors, pads, grips and gear cable, but not the brake hose. Would be interesting to hear your thoughts if it is.

Nah mate it's Jagwire. They've been out of stock on their orange hose for 6-8 months so I couldn't wait for em. I haven't used their hose yet but Jagwire is pretty damn good. It would be nice if I could get the different colours here in Aus though. Always have to get it off ebay.

Actually on second thoughts I have used their cables/hoses on my other bike. From memory the hose was a bit stiffer which made it tougher to get round tight bends but apart from that it was fine. I’d use it again but I do think Jagwire is slightly better to work with and the colours are easier to get.

<3 Its gorgeous!
Just a heads up that the Dropper routing can be a pain. And the rubber gromits arent fun to get in.

Ok so it's built and almost finished. I've had 2 days riding lame XC trails on it just to make sure it works as advertised and that I hadn't ballsed anything up. Then I had a ride at Stromlo (last minute decision Maj otherwise I would've dropped you a line to catch up) and 2 days at Thredbo. I'll go all full build report etc later as there is one more little touch that I'm waiting on to complete the build but here is a quick pic of the almost finished beast.

Looking good! I like the orange. Now I'm just waiting for those OCD types to start commenting on your Maxxis logos... :D

That looks great!, The orange lines look spectacular.
Hows the Push fork and shock on it? My push should be in next week.

Funny you mention that. I'm kinda stroking out when I see it myself. Thanks for reminding me......

I've had the push on the back of a Mach 6 for 2 years and it's amazing. It made the Mach 6 a beast and on this bike I feel it's even better. The ACS3 up front is pretty damn special too. I was lapping Thredbo the last 2 days on it and the thing I noticed the most was that by the end of the run the front end felt exactly the same as when I started. The forks weren't heating up and getting stiffer (which even my Fox 36's did to some extent) and it means my hands/forearms aren't pumping up. It's also really nice to be mid way through a nice big steep walled bank G'ing out and the fork feels the same, nice and plush yet supportive. In my limited experience its a pretty awesome combo. Once the bike is fully finished I'll do a more in depth review of my experience but I think I've just built pretty much my perfect bike. I can't really think of anything I would change at this early stage.... Oh one super annoying thing with the Eleven Six and the linkage on this bike. You cannot adjust the rebound whilst the shock is on the bike. Minor price to pay but it does shit me.
