Filming with gopro - suggestions?

Took a video at Hornsby yesterday, was my first time using the gopro, I'm using a chest mount and it seems OK!

Just wanting some hints on what settings are needed, etc as this is literally straight out of the camera... One thing I've noticed is that I'd be much better filming riding this type of track on an overcast day or earlier in the morning... I haven't tried the gopro studio software yet, no idea if it will change it much!

Hey mate I took a look at your video. It's pretty standard GoPro footage and you did a pretty nice job of keeping it smooth. My stuff from the chesty is jittery as all hell.

Check this guy out:

Abe does a heap of work for GoPro making those amazing videos you see on their store displays. He also does a lot of testing for them and is a guru on all things GoPro.

It's a handy cheat sheet that tells you the best resolutions and frame rates for the type of filming you want to do. I keep it with my GoPro kit and it's been invaluable.

Read this article by Abe above.

It's a great article explaining all the stuff in the cheat sheet.

And finally I suggest always shoot in as high a frame rate and resolution as you can. The higher frame rate will give you the smoothest slo-mo and the res will give you the ability to downscale as you need whilst leaving you with the highest quality product for bigger projects. I also strongly recommend avoiding using Protune for almost all applications. Yes it can give you ridiculous flexibility but you really need to know what you are doing to be able to get the most out of it. For the average punter your footage will be way better using the standard GoPro settings as the camera does a really good job most of the time working out the best exposures etc.

Good luck, it's a lot of fun producing your own movies and even better seeing your mates when you get good footage of them.

Looks very good for a first attempt!

Usual issues I come across when shooting these:

1. wrong camera resolution which means key parts of the scene are cropped off

2. rattling/breathing/scraping noises

3. Dirty lens or things dangling in front of lens like camelbak hose etc

4. Shake.

5. Pointed too far down or high.

6. Not trimming boring things out of the video.

I think number 6 is the key issue at the moment... Easy enough to resolve by editing it/trimming it... Or just by riding more exciting tracks...

I think angle looks good for now... It was a lucky guess, didn't even check it!

Do ewe have the go pro app. for your phone (assuming ewe have an intelligent phone)?
I find it useful for setting the angles.

Sweet trails, videos cool NUTTTR. Definitely choose a morning to film in, the light and shadow contrast is less harsh, your videos a bit overexposed so looks a bit washed out, might be able to adjust it during editing but its best to get the correct raw footage first.
Only other suggestion I would have is to get the camera off your self (POV) sometimes. Set it up on a corner or hung from a tree to get some different angles of your riding and spice up your videos a bit more :thumb:

Cheers, thanks! I agree, early morning it is! I'll just have to put the effort in and get up early!

Agree on the POV, will have to look into that, would be good to get flybys...

I got this one too:

But it is a little dark/light in sections, I'll have to look into the processing options in the Gopro software!

Here's one I shot ages ago on a cheap $50 Kmart special, but it shows some different angles and easy to do by yourself.
