Fire Warnings

All his redneck mates be telling him we should adopt the indigenous policy of regular massive burns.
Not aimed at you Moorey just an interesting viewpoint..
Back burning for thousands of years is a part of the problem why we now have with Eucalyptus dominated forests. Gums are the apex predator of the plant world, no species can compete especially after fire. The diversity of the forests has been reduced dramatically from fire.. Back burning clears fire load but it also allows the Eucalypts to thrive at the expense of all other plant/tree species.. We are now stuck in this cycle no much we can do about it now..

Mikes right, military assets are extremely useful to support logistics (as we are seeing right now), but that’s because support logistics are very common between emergency and warfare situations.

Dual-role tactical functions not so much. It’s no different to trying to use a DH MTB as a commuter for 20km of road riding. You can do it, but it just outright doesn’t make sense. Military hardware is also massively more expensive to operate per hour. The fuel burn, maintenance cycle and so on are far lesser considerations compared to their role capability.

Converting our C130’s to Fire Support roles would be useful if we didn’t life-cycle to the margins of their effective service life in Defence use anyway.

Coulsons C130 probably has a few more airframe hours up its sleeve but C130’s are very rarely available to civilian purchase (there’s like 4! globally in non-government hands). That said using Airforce C130’s and C17’s to get the right firefighting equipment where it’s needed would be smart.

The best bet is 737 based airframe conversions, they are far more readily supported on the ground, can do logistics and water bombing. They have the deployment speed and range to be operating anywhere in Australia within 12 hours from cold-start and realistically we would need maybe 4 of them nationally as any more than 2 operating in a single fire zone would be pretty risky.

Do we a national capability - yes - but part of that needs to be buying capabilities that can dovetail around assets we have for other purposes. Should we have a National pool of firefighting hardware (trucks, tankers logistics support gear) that perhaps is managed and mobilised by Defence? Maybe - that’s starting to sound a little like some of the USA National Guard roles, and that perhaps isn’t a terrible thing.
Shorten was going to spend 80 mil decking out Black hawks and Erickson S-64 Air-crane helicopters.

Nah, fuck that bloke. He's shifty. Scomo knows how to protect the 'conamy. Go sports ball team!
Unfortunately, we had a choice and simply the wrong one was made, maybe it will teach them to go after the lies and prove them wrong in other elections. I bet skynews will still be making BS up about all this.

Converting low-hour military choppers is vastly different economically to converting high-hour high-cycle transport aircraft. Definitely a good strategic decision given the value of used Blackhawks on the open used arms market.

Overall the Shorten/Labor approach would be a better long term strategy for any government, and most importantly I believe that once the initial $100M is found and paid, the year on year benefits will justify the future costs. The insurance industry would sure as heck rather spend a few million on donations for prevention than paying out punters - they’re on the end of paying out $1B which they probably don’t have full reinsurance for, so dropping $20M/year tax deductible bucks into risk mitigation is likely to be attractive to them.

It’s still a lot of money to spend on top of the existing allocations. Keep in mind that the Federal Government also steps in a pays towards the additional costs of fighting fires (or any significant disaster) when they occur so we are getting a budget hole no matter what now. It’s not much but every displaced person is likely to become elegance for a Disaster Recovery Payment of $1K - that makes a huge difference to many.

Don’t be surprised to see a Fire Fighting Levy in the next Federal Budget to tap $20/week from every tax payer to fund a National Emergency Force.

If you know people affected - keep a watch on this site - The AGDRP of $1K May help them.

They may be eligible for income support if they can’t work as a result of fires (ie casual employees of a closed store etc).

Or having some leniency in their Centrelink Payments (Even Age Pensioners do income reporting!) obligations may give them peace of mind.

some dickhead was lighting fires in Curtin last night. Cops nabbed him though.

Summernats burnouts are going ahead. Hope they choke or dehydrate themselves

We've got a few things packed and ready to go if it comes to it today, or in the coming weeks.

Stocked up on masks and asthma meds too... sigh

Light and AC having a few minor twitches with the sudden but quick drops in voltage... Just happy the power is on at all!

thanks to all the tradies that got No.4 running at full capacity at Bayswater just before Xmas, enjoy your AC and lights..
your welcome!

Hurts. Requires Money. And is nerdy.
Clearly they weren’t installed by tradies. Otherwise it’d be an infallible system right.

I see that there is a fire out near Yaouk now, if it spreads to the north the ACT is in real danger..Again!
Lightning also predicted later on..

Lol. Since when are AGL engineers considered tradies? Hunter tradies would still be "gettin back to ya with a quote on ya turbine brus"

We drove home from the Big Smoke along the Bells Line of Road in the Blue Mountains yesterday.

The number of completely non-fire retardant ancient weatherboard buildings that the locals and the fire authorities managed to save in Bilpin, Clarence and Dargan despite having clearly been intimately surrounded by burning bushes was amazing...

Of course, though...not all were so fortunate.

In our case, our 40 plus year old mudbrick house is virtually indefensible. Building itself won't yet withstand an ember attack and we don't have any water to fight one. I didn't even bother buying a firefighter before the season. All we could do is tidy up, establish open understorey zones and clear some trees, both directly away from the house and also in the wider house area in order to break up the canopy.

But, if the Pilliga wants this place, we'll be at the town swimming pool. This year anyway...
