First Dually Question

G'day all

Just wondering if anyone has a positive/negative experience with Merida Dual suspension XC bikes? Definitely going to be a 29er.

I was thinking Merida or Giant. If that helps

I’d take the giant over the Merida. Maestro is a solid suspension design.

Merida is in my mind one of the few brands that I will never own due to perceived blandness.

Which models are you looking at?

The current Trance 29er is a nice riding bike and quite versatile. Its abilities far exceed what you'd expect from the amount of suspension travel too.

That Merida certainly has a better spec than that anthem. Are they the same price point?

Yeah pretty much.

The Giant obviously has "better" after sales service because there are more Giant dealers.

Also though of the Scott Spark. But I'm unsure if you can get it in 29er...?

Merida are bland in their marketing but they do a pretty good job offering good value bikes.

Are you sure you are best auited to an XC bike? They are pretty specialised these days. A trail bike like the trance or Merida 120 would suit a lot of people who think a xc bike is what they want.

I will second this. Are you racing XC? If not and it's just for a casual weekend ride then get something more relaxed and comfy like a Trance.

Are you sure you need a duallie? Trek do the IsoSpeed decoupler that lets the seat post flex to take the sting away, works a treat.

There's another brand that I can't think of right now, that use the same idea but using a different method.

And I'll third this. A trail bike is not a restrictive climber these days, modern shocks make a decent trail bike climb like a mountain goat.

If you're not at the pointy end of the field, you'll appreciate the more relaxed geo and capable descending abilities of a trail bike. An xc bike will likely be faster up a hill but could hold you back down them and won't be nearly as comfy towards the end of a marathon.

Honestly, if you're newish to the game I'd always recommend against something specialist like an xc or dh bike. Trail/am bikes cover far more territory and do it all near as well as the specialist bikes.

Yah, trance, 120, camber (I think spesh have ditched the camber now and do a short travel stumpy?) Etc. I'd suggest not getting too hung up on a brand or model, but it's pointless, your heart is going to lead you regardless.

120-130mm travel would probably be the sweet spot if you've got xc tendencies. A little more travel if you were more into descending. Or be like the rest of us and have 23 different bikes to suit your mood on the day

I rode a demo Trance 29er on my local trails and it did not climb very well. It was a fun bike that descended better than I expected and was easy to bunny hop. The bike just sapped my energy on the steep climbs and did not handle the techy stuff well.
I went with a GT sensor that climbs heaps better and is a far better bike for me. The only issue I have is hitting the rear wheel on my ass at times
I read a lot of reviews and looking at the bikes on paper you would think the complete opposite for both bikes climbing capabilities.
If I was riding less steep and less technical stuff then I think I would be happy with the trance.

I would try and grab a demo ride on a trail as Car park tests are only good for getting a feel for the size of the bike.
